Does anyone think 'anatomic' handlebars are better?

Seems to be the old bend is better - easier to reach the brakes, more hand positions.

  • I like them better... but I'm talking about true ergonomic bars... it doesn't seem to make much difference about the curve on the drop part (although I do prefer a flat section there)

The best bars I've ever tried are 3T bio-morphe (now selling as cinelli neo-morphe).
The have ovalised tops, squashed corners with knobbly bits, more room under the brake levers for an extra finger hold on the hoods, thumb indents on the [compact] drops... the first bar where I actually feel comfortable using the drops...

How much of the shape do you lose when they're taped? I'm back on round bars, Shimano Pro-PLT, which are very comfortable. Personally, I think having the bar height correct is more important than the shape of the bar.
  • I haven't got around to taping them yet ... I did all the protype testing for my vertebrae ceramic housings on these bars, so I was continually installing & uninstalling the cables.

Soon after that, my front 650c wheel packed in, and due to various postal errors, it has been sent across the Atlantic more times than I'd copulated up until my mid-twenties. So I still haven't got around to taping them yet.
  • I'm not a fan of ergo bends anymore. The brake levers are moved too far away in the drops. Also they look a little bit ugly IMO.

Altough I still use ergos, I like variable radius bars, a somewhat more traditional bend but modified for a shorter reach on the hoods whilst keeping the brake levers near in the drops. I also like flat tops although mounting computers/lights etc can be a pain. My favourite bars are Cinelli RAMs, which I half tape.

I love FSA's compact bend. I have quite large hands, so the ergo bars I tried had very tight bends where the edges of my palms sat, which was quite painful. Standard bars were better than ergos, but still not perfect, the compacts are.
  • No, i find them uncomfortable and as a previous poster says they put the brake levers too far away - total gimmick IMO. i don't think its any surprise that most pros still use the classic bend.

  • That is exactly what is good about the bio-morphe. It has a short reach & short drop.

    They're not cheap though. :(

I prefer the "compact shape" with a hefty drop.

I find a larger drop to the hoods is more comfortable, but that makes "deep drop bars" too low down.

Because I've got a pretty large headtube on my good bike, I prefer classic deep drop round bars.
