Ive been to a specialist LBS instead of the usual clowns ive been going to with the intention of replacing the Shimano RS20 rear wheel which has been totally unreliable so far, though ive no complaints about the front RS20.

Guy at specialist LBS has a black rim Shimano 105 rear wheel which he has handbuilt . It has 32 spokes and a superior hub compared to the Rs20 . I stressed that I was despondent with the RS20`s as the spokes are tricky to get and a general pain in the butt , regular spokes that are dime a dozen and easy to obtain was the way i wished to go.

LBS guy says the 105 is a much superior wheel to the Rs20 and it is fitted with 32 spokes instead of the RS20`s 24 spokes , he says it will withstand a rougher ride to a much better degree. The spokes he handbuilt it with are DT spokes , which I know are plentiful and readily available.

Its costing me 69 quid for the new wheel , im just going to keep the troublesome rear RS20 in the garage as a spare. Should a handbuilt Shimano 105 with 32 DT spokes be more what I need than the RS20 one with 24 spokes that is never out of repair centre ?

Do you know what make / model the rim is? Shimano 105 hubs are durable and generally trouble free ( I have had many thousands of miles on 105 / open pro)- so provided the rim is up to scratch I would say go ahead. I personally gave up on specialist factory wheels
years ago - I am too ignorant to notice any advantage over traditional handbuilt wheels.
  • Thats a reasonable price and the advice is correct. 4 out of 5 of my sets are hand builts with opern pro. Provided it is 07 or 08 105 and is on open pro not open sport then go for it. Alternatively if you want to be totally sure get a 36 105 hub and open pro rim (a coupkle of quid extra for the additional spokes). Other top tips are make sure they are double butted spokes and ask for them to be 'spoke locked'.

"open pro " sounds familiar, I think thats what LBS guy mentioned.
