Q for triple users
Got a triple on my Bianchi (and am glad i got it now that i've moved to the Lakes!!!)
Anyway, it doesnt see to sit very well in the middle ring and largest rear sprocket, sometimes seems to jump and is quite loud on this combination of ring / sprockets. I've checked the front mech trimming position and it seems ok. Does anyone else get this problem with this combination? I dont have any trouble on the mountain bike using big ring / large rear, so wondering if there is something wrong with the setup on the road bike.
Thanks

not necessarily on that combination - but I always have some combination that clicks (and not necessarily ones I'd expect.)
i don't have jumping or slipping though, just noise.0 -
I have Ultegra/Bontrager RaceLite triple and often use that combo - middle ring (39) and biggest rear sprocket (25) with no problems.
With the bike upside down or in a stand, turn the pedals in that gear while slowly turning the bottom screw on the rear mech to eliminate the noise and skipping.
Park Tools site has a good explanation.
I generally need to do that whenever I change the gear cables.0 -
I had the same problem on my mtb - turned out the middle chain ring was bent and needed replacing - sorted it. Heaven knows how you bend a middle chainring!
I'd take it to lbs.

Dr M,
Which Bianchi did you go for in the end? Also, I am curious to know, where did you go for your fitting?
Anyway, I have a 928 C2C with a 105 triple set-up on it using a 12/27 cassette.
I don't have any problems with rubbing or noise using the middle ring to large rear sprocket so I would say it is down to fine fettling!
Can you tell if the noise is coming from the front chainring area or the rear mech?
It could be that the limit screw needs adjusting at the rear if its not quite letting the mech go over far enough. This would cause a rattling type of noise. However, be very careful and adjust in very small increments as if you over do it, there is a risk the chain will overshoot and go between the cassette and the spokes
If the noise is at the front, could it be that the angle of the front mech is wrong? Does it sound like a rubbing or scraping noise? Again adjust in very small increments and when you have adjusted anything, check the gear selection over the entire range just in case you have thrown out something else.
The other thing to check is cable tension. The gear cables can go slack after a short time and that might also cause the problem. Does it sometimes jump back to the next smallest sprocket at the back? Again tighten in very small increments if you think it could be this i.e quarter of a turn at a time.
I know you shouldn't ride using this combination, but does the problem get worse if you use the outer (biggest) ring and largest sprocket?
I think it is a case of small adjustment - then try. And repeat.
Hope this helps,
