Can you help me with the all up weights of the following bikes:

Cannondale Caad9 105 2008/9 £999
Trek 1.7 105 2009 £900
Specialized Allez Elite 105 2009 £999
Giant Defy 1 105 2009 £950

Any comments of which would be the best of the 4 also welcome.

Thanks

  • Here's the way I look at this:

Cannondale = BMW / Audi - more exclusive, refined. Lot's of people have heard about them, not everybody has owned one. Interesting designs & good engineering base.

Trek = Ford / Opel - they know how to make cars, but in some parts of the world, every man and his dog own one.*

Specialized = Subaru / Peugeot / VW - definitely produce some great cars, but everyone in Europe still seems to have one. Lacks the prestige to be considered a true luxury car. No one took them seriously until the last decade.

Giant = Toyota / Mitsubishi / Mazda - make some of the most reliable cars ever built, represent value for money & not quite everyone in the world owns one.*

    * opinion about which brands are actually perceived to be more common depends on how far away you live from American / Asian mainlands.

they all have similar specs by the look of it. Check the wheels to see how they compare though.

Best have a ride on them if you can. I've never wanted a Cannondale or Giant myself.

I basically agree with the bike - car idea, except I'd have

Cannondale - BMW - good but a bit flash.

Trek - Ford - good but a bit bland (although the '08 bikes are impressive)

Spesh - VW - Good but everywhere. Good design and spec, a benchmark at the price? Design a bit messy these days though.

Giant - Mazda - Probably good but I never want one so don't pay any attention

  • I like the car comparison although I am not a bike snob at all(present bike Carrera from Halfords with about 7000 miles on it). Any of my examples would be a good upgrade.
I got to a large LBS today.
They had just got in a Spesh Elite 2009. Looked very good and also has carbon seat stay for what it is worth. I also know I get on well the spesh saddles so money "saved" there.
The Trek 1.7 also looks good.
I am going to test ride both of these here as soon as time allows.
Have now dismissed the Giant. I know fit, desired spec etc is important but if you are going to spend a lot of money on a bike there is also something of a feel good factor there and the Giant just does not seem to have it for me!
Still thinking about the Caad9. I will have to find somewhere to test ride that.
    Cheers

    How much do you weigh?

Add 18 lbs to your weight and then calculate the percentage difference of being 2 lbs out. Then, unless you are an elite category racing snake, in which case I apologise for being presumptious, forget about the weight difference and find which one fits you and rides best.
