I bought an Endura baselayer earlier this year. A good piece of kit but it is starting to smell, even after washing. Anyone got any tips on how to get rid of the smell or do I just need to put up with it until the Howies sale is on and I can get a merino baselayer?

It's less than 6 months old........!

It never get worn more than once without being washed, and with 2 kids the washer is always on so it's not like it sits in the washer for a week before it gets washed. I put it outside yesterday to air and it seemed much better. I hung it in the spare room last night ready for today's ride and it stinks in there this morning!!

Get your wife to do it man! Sure she will use a pre-wash or some fabric conditioner, anything to get rid of that awful smell eh?
  • The current vogue for washing things at 30 degrees is as yet an unproven bit of science, as far as I am concerned. Bugs thrive at 30 degrees but are generally killed off at temps >37 degrees...

If the baselayer is polyester, try washing at 40 degrees, on 'gentle/delicates' program, or maybe witth pre-wash as well, and then see.
If its merino then do 'woolwash'...

  • Anaerobic bugs hate UV. If we are lucky enough to see some sunshine this week, try hanging it out for a few hours, I've found it a very effective way to clean tech kit. If you don't have a line, even just hanging clothes on a chair beside a south facing window works.

Otherwise, try some of the new powders with enzymes designed to wash at very low temperatures - I use Ariel low temp, I've found it great, even on 'quick and cool' wash program.

I have this with a number of tops. Do a wash with them at a higher temperature. If the smell gets so bad that you don't want to wear it, then it's worth risking damaging the top in order to save it.
  • Ground Effect Ristretto is the only option. No stink at all even after a 500 mile week and being used as a pillow. And it's nice and cheap too.

Y'all can even wear it when you're sitting on yo' porch and playing the banjee..

I have noticed this with a few items I have - some manmade fabrics are fine, others have this problem, I haven't quite worked out which fabrics to avoid.

However, Merino wool seems to solve the problem, Icebreaker make some good baselayers for around £35, had no problem with them.
  • you sure its drying quick enough once washed? if i dont dry my kit quick enough it can stink.
