hi

im riding a Specialized Hardrock Sport

i am upgrading from v-brakes to discs at the end of the month. Im going to get Hayes Stroker Ryde (or Hayes Stroker Trail if anyone can convince me why to spend the extra cash?)

Will need to replace current shifters as they are combined with the v-brake levers. 8 speed bike. Gotta be cheap and work with current mech's. Shimano Acera.

Looking at Shimano Alivio 8 Speed Shifters would these work? and is there anything roughly the same price that would be better?

  • Not sure about the shifters, but do you have disk compatible hubs? i.e. can you bolt on rotors or do you need a new hub?

if you need a new hub (as I suspect) then you will either need a wheel build or buy new disk ready wheels.

have you also budgeted for the rotors (or do they come with the brakes?)

If you do need new disc compatible wheels I have a brand new specialized wheelset off my rockhopper that you could have for a very reasonable price. I upgraded to crossrides before it even left the shop so they are absolutely as new. Let me know if you're interested. Rich
  • yup, need new hubs.

forgot to mention. mavis crossroads are on the end of month shopping list too ;)

Its an 8 speed Acera system Nick.

    I'd get the Alivio.

Expensive all round upgrade mind. I'd do the forks first if already haven't

  • Cheers for the replies :)

Alivio it is then. Would love to upgrade my fork. Really not impressed with the standard Suntour one. Cant expect too much from a £250 bike though ;)

Going for a Fox 32 Float RLC in a couple of months. Depends how much overtime I can force myself to do, with the weather being as it is just now I dont think that will be too much of a problem :)

Don't overdo the upgrading though! Soon the the parts will be far better than the frame.

I wouldn't upgrade anything at all right now. Not the brakes or the SHifters or the wheels or fork - the money from all these plus the cash from selling the Hardrock and a little more will get a bike with far better all round spec.
