I appreciate there may be a range of answers, but I'm thinking of converting my Spec. Allez from double to a triple - can anyone please give me some indication of cost??
I have around £50 in my mind is that accurate?

Is it easier to buy the components and DIY or is it quite a difficult job?

Thanks

  • Cheaper option is to swap to compact - just a chainset swap. For triple you may also need BB, front mech, rear mech (not sure about changers?)
Carlsberg don't make cycle clothing, but if they did it would probably still not be as good as Assos

you'll need BB, chainset, front mech and strictly speaking rear mech too.

There's no way that will come in under £50

why do you want a triple?

    That sounds like a challenge:
    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... HIMCHAR790 £26.06
    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... HIMBTBR710 £13.01
    http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productde ... HIMGRFR680 £8.96

Comes to a total of £48.03

(if you go for the 8-speed bits you can get a rear as well for £55)

Depends what rear cassette you have - I run 13-23 with a 53/39/30 front on my commuting/training bike and the short-cage rear mech copes OK.

  • I'm looking at a triple because I find the steeper hills very hard work

  • Try a compact front witha a 13-27 cassette. It would be much much much easier on your legs an back and a cheaper(free if you have the tools) job.

  • another perhaps easier/cheaper option

stick a mountain bike cassette 11-32 and rear mech on.

    a lot less faff

Well shopped that man 8) . Some good deals at Ribble at the moment I see. If you spend two more quid you'll get free post and 10% off too.

I need to build another bike......

  • Nooooooo..... don't put a triple on. They're more trouble than they're worth. I've just changed my GF's bike from a triple to a compact and it's imeasurably better.

To go compact you'll need a new BB and chainset. You might also need a new mech (check the details of your mech on the Shimano website).
  • I should have said...... if you've got an external BB then you won't need a new one.
