Peak District Riders - What tyres do you use?

Hi.

My Panaracer Fire XC Pro's (2.1) are on their last legs (rear one definately is) so im in the market for some new tyres. I do 90% of my routes around the Peak District in the usual areas such as Hayfield, Ladybower, Edale, Hope, Macc Forest with the occasional trip to the trail centres in North Wales so i need an all round tyre that is more suited to wet, rocky, sandy & boggy conditions (general all year round conditions in the peaks) and wears well.

The Fire XC Pros haves served me well over the past 2 years but i fancy trying something different as these are the only tyres i have ever used. The only ones ive found so far that might suit the peaks are:

Continental Mountain King Protection 2.2

or

Panaracer Cinder.

Can all you peaks riders let me know what tyres you use and how you think they suit the conditions of the peaks.

My bike is a Giant XTC SX.

Cheers

Ian

A mate of mine runs the cinders on his Yeti, seems pretty impressed with 'em. Personally I run on Maxxis Highrollers, the singleply version with wire beads. Run the rear one backwards for better bite whilst climbing. They do clog a little in the peat and worst of the mud, but unless you go for a full on mud tyre, not may dont!
Another tyre worth a look is the Nevegal by Kenda, good all rounder and slightly less prone to clogging I've found.
As for the Maxxis, I run a supertacky 42A front and the 60A rear. Stands up well to the descents I've been down so far- Jacobs last night, the Beast and blackley hey etc...

As for the Conti's dont do it. I've hated conti tyres for a while, totally uninspiring and confidence knocking in the wet. Which is what we've been riding in pretty much all fecking year!

  • Sorry, not to be mean: I fail to see how an entire geographical area would specially "require" a certain tyre. The peak District (which i too know) is no different to any other Uk site with a forest in it and a hill or two. Nothing special about it in terms of terrain.
It's like saying " people living on Street X, tell me what tyre you use on your tarmac"! As opposed to the tarmac three blocks away??

  • What ate the maxxis and cinders like on tarmac in relation to drag? Alot of my rides involve road riding so dont want a tyre thats gonna knacker me out before i get to the hills.

I cant say the peak district terrain is similar to say like cannock or thetford.

    Sounds like Essex!

We tend to do some road miles with linking bits of rides together, not found them especially draggy... (Highrollers)

  • Nobby Nics at the moment. I had a pair of Specialized Resolution Pro for the summer, but they are terrible in the wet. Most of my riding is around the white Peak though.
