you were flat out on 50-12 ?

on the flat or down a hill?

If you need higher gears you either need to spin your legs faster or start racing

You either weren't pedalling fast enough or you're on your way to a pro contract.

50-12 is easily enough to get to 40mph, even a masher like me.

42.5mph is my best in 50-12. What are you doing over the winter that necessitates this kind of speed?

    How about a 11-23 cassette...
...but, I honestly can't see why that would be necessary - especially in Winter.

I assume you have to go up them at some point too though?

Bet you loved that 34/25 combo for that?
  • I have a 52/39 crankset, and a 12/27 cassette... Can go anywhere with it, even made the Alp D'Huez in France this summer with this setup!

depends how hilly your region is, and how you like to climb. 34-25 is lower than 39-27.

All I can say is I reckon you're not 52, with dodgey knees, and 190lbs.....
