on the flat or down a hill?

Try a 52 or 53/39 chainset and answer your own question.....Spring!

42.5mph is my best in 50-12. What are you doing over the winter that necessitates this kind of speed?0

How about a 11-23 cassette...
...but, I honestly can't see why that would be necessary - especially in Winter.Rich0 -
were i live there is a lot of hills so going down them rather fast0

I assume you have to go up them at some point too though?
Bet you loved that 34/25 combo for that?0 -
I have a 52/39 crankset, and a 12/27 cassette... Can go anywhere with it, even made the Alp D'Huez in France this summer with this setup!0

depends how hilly your region is, and how you like to climb. 34-25 is lower than 39-27.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0

All I can say is I reckon you're not 52, with dodgey knees, and 190lbs.....Spring!
