Trashed A Headset. Pic
Trashed a headset today but would like to know how it's supposed to be installed, the problem was that after the cups were pressed into the frame i could no longer fit the bearings into the cups, they would go so far in but not all the way, question is were the bearings supposed to be installed into the cups before being pressed in, i:e bearings and cups as one whole unit, pic below shows the type i mean.

be careful not all Zero stack headsets use the same insertion depth.
sounds like you have the wrong one for the frame."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

In which way would it be wrong, the cups fit in perfectly, OD 44mm Depth 9mm,0
-
like i said they come in different depths. that you are describing is the typical result of the cup being pressed into the frame and bottoming out."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just double checked and the recess in the frame is around 9.4 mm so you would think it would be right, if it's wrong how the hell do i find the correct one.0

Boardman Comp, I bought the frame seperatley, so came with no headset, if a pic of the head tube would help let me know.0

Just to be clear, you would normally press the cups and then slip the bearings in.
Often you can just replace the bearings leaving the cups in place,
here you can see the head tube has been machined with lots of clearance.
crane creek tend to have less insert depth
what is your current and old ones?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Don't have an old one as it's a new frame bought separately, but this is the one i've tried to fit,

i would say that the angle on the base of that one is contacting the internal part of the frame as it is a very deep taper."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Got any suggestions on what might fit, i'm at a bit of a dead end now, how about one of the two i linked to above. Cheers BTW.0

nice. but what i would do is take it to your LBS so you can have a look at what there is available.
also take the cups you have for comparison.
Also be aware some cane creek ones have different insertion depths top and bottom.
eg:
"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ok Nick cheers, problem is LBS is a bit crap TBH, everything i ever need always needs to be ordered in, so if something doesn't fit i have to wait another week or so for another order ( it could take weeks to get the correct one)plus they pressed the cups in this morning and said it was fine so don't have much faith in them.0

in that case i would take a deep breath and pop into halfords and see if you can find out more info on the headset."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ok will do, what about the FSA one i linked to above, don't mind dealing with Wiggle, i've sent stuff back before and they are spot on, looks like a decent headset and looks good too.0

Take the previous advice and go to Halfords as they are the only outlet for Boardman frames n'est ce pas?
Can we fix it?
Yes we can!0 -
unfortunately there is not much info here http://www.boardmanbikes.com/boardman_road_spec.pdf"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Sorry, thought i'd said, they don't know what they are selling, i allready tried them, they tried fitting a cane creek one with too deep a cup, and any further questions i asked them ended in them saying..."hmmmmm well it could be this or it could be that" i had the same dealings with Edinburgh Cycles, that's why i resorted to the Ritchey one off the net.0

Yeah, i've looked at that too, Semi Integrated is all it says.0 -
Try a FSA Orbit CE

but that is an integrated headset. the Comp uses a Zero stack."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

That's the Pro, it takes an Intergrated Headset as oppose to a Semi Intergrated, it has i different headtube to the comp, i've allready checked it.0

semi-integrated = integrated headset they mean the same thing.
I'd suggest that you want a "Campagnolo" compatible headset rather than "Cane Creek", and that the Orbit CE would be your best bet.0 -
The head tube is different though, i've allready had a look. also that Ritchey one i allready have is Campy compatiable and that's the one i'm having touble with,.... this is becoming a pain.0

It's a little hard to explain, i'll try and find some pics, but, the Team and the Pro have a headset that sits up in the headtube( Hidden), from what i can gather, the head tube is machined internally so the bearings can run on the frame, mine is totaly different as the bearings run in the cups.0

Can anyone confirm if this is likeley to fit, getting desperate now,

semi-integrated = integrated headset they mean the same thing.
SEMI INTEGRATED = Cups pressed into frame, bearings fit in cups
INTEGRATED = Bearings fit directly into machined head tube.
I had a similar issue at the beginning of the year trying to find a new headset for a Bianchi Via Nirone. Ended up fitting tie ZS3 as mentioned. The original HS had much deeper cups than the ZS3 and probably seated against the bevelled face inside the headset, obviousley because the ZS3 cups are shallower (6mm deep bearings instead of 9 from memory, i think) they do not go as far down the head tube, but this has not been a problem. In future you can buy the bearings as seperate items.0
