got my first roadie last week (Its a Giant Bowery) after years of MTBing.
After a few wet rides to work it has been making some strange creaking/ cracking noises, i undid the stem bolts and retightened them evenly, still makes the crack when im on the bars.
Its definately coming from the stem, and it seems really flexy too, so i think i may just buy a better stem (i am a pimp and a whore so upgrades are inevitable anyway)

Any advice on whats hot for a limited budget (£50 tops but id prefer cheaper)
O/S, 100-120mm long, zero or 10o.

i'm quite impressed with the ITM Visia stuff - I have a 100mm stem and the bars too - seem pretty good for the money although I am aware there are a lot of cheaper models out there. It seems well finished though and even little things like the inside of the four face bolts (allen key recess) haven't rusted yet where every other stem I've ever had the bolts have rusted at the first sign of damp! (i do live near the coast mind - salty air and all that..)
