Consistent punctures caused by tyre on Orange P7

Bike is a 2008 Orange P7, Kenda Nevegal tyres and WTB Speeddisk AM rims. I've had a string of rear wheel slow punctures. Caused by something rubbing the inner side of the tube. Finally figured out that the wire bead on the tyre is exposed in many places and is rubbing through the tube. I've read good things about this tyre, so reckon it must be the tyre in combination with something else (or the tyre is defective).

Tyre and rim? The tyre is incredibly difficult to get off rim, and should the bead be so far in the rim that it is rubbing the inner side of the tube?

Tyre and bike? The annoying dropout system (the majority of owners aren't going to want to fit a single speed or hub gear) means that it is very hard to get the wheel straight in the frame. Running a slighly squint wheel will cause all sorts of odd effects, certainly in the tyre/tube area. I've not had problems with the same setup up front so this might be it.

I was going to start with a new, non wire tyre. Any opinions before I lash the cash?

Cheers

i dont understand the drop out proble? just have it eith fully forward or full rear. and the wheels should be straight.

the tyre tube problem is it the same place each time?

  • You would think your dropout suggestion would make the wheel straight, but it doesn't. The tube wears pretty much all the way round.

that does surprise me. i dont have an Orange but i do have 2 bikes with that style of drop out and in those two positions the wheel is true.

if the tube is being worn that badly and only on one wheel and the tyres are the same try swapping the tyres around and see if the problem moves with the tyre.

just as a note the 2007's are speced with the Kenda Nevegal 2.1 while the 08's are speced with Continental Speed King 2.3.

    maybe a change is needed?

  • Yeah, looks like I got old model tyres on this. I'll check out the front tyre to see what's going on there (have had about 8 rear punctures this year and none front) and swap the tyres. Cheers.
