Am sure this will be easy for someone to answer (fingers crossed), my fulcrum 7's just arrived and I went to fit my shimano 9 speed cassette but it doesn't line up and seems to be bigger than the freehub body! Before i go back to the shop - am I doing something wrong?

If it is a campag hub instead of shimano is there anyway of switching the freehubs rather than the hassle of having to send the wheels back etc etc!!

Any help appreciated!!

I recently bought a Shimano-splined set of these. No issues mounting the cassette. Tyres - that's a different matter.

If you have bought the wrong version, I've been quoted two prices for freehub changes in the past. Shimano 9-speed freehub for a pair of Campag Zondas was quoted as £65 by Italian Cycle Products before they went bye bye, and I recently had my DT Swiss RR1850's freehub changed to run on my Campag-shod bike at a cost of £60.

Given that it's a £100-£100 wheelset I'd take a walk of shame and tell them you've ballsed up - assuming they've not supplied the wrong model - and plead ignorance. If you're lucky or they're a decent shop they may exchange the rear wheel free of charge.
  • The invoice shows I ordered the shimano ones so guess they picked the wrong ones off the shelf - oh well! I'll call them!

Just a thought - could i put a campag cassette on it (presuming it is campag) and use it with the rest of the shimano set-up?

not easily is the answer to that I'm afraid. the spacing of the sprockets and therefore the indexing is different for Shimano and Campag.
There is a gadget you can fit that is supposed to make it work but frankly you'd be better off obtaining a Shimano freehub.
I'm sure if you phone and ask nicely the shop will allow you to post back just the freehub especially if it is their mistake. Buy rights they should pick up the postage tab as they didn't supply you what you ordered.
  • Okay thanks - guess i was clutching at straws!

    Thanks
  • The shop apologised, arranged to pick up the old ones and send new ones next day - can't ask fairer! Winstanleys Bikes by the way!

    Thanks

good news . :D perhaps we should name that shop because that is exemplary service and we all too often complain about poor bike shop service. It would be nice to praise and recommend them
  • Yes - except the wrong ones were sent again!! Grr
  • You might find this webpage helpful to determine whether it actually is a campag hub

    To err is human,
but to really screw things up you need a shimano - campag mixed drivechain.

They've replaced them and the new ones are just the same ?

Just in case it's somehow you, rather than the shop that's at fault, i.e. they've twice sent you Shimano ones but for some reason you can't get the cassette on, there isn't something on the box which says whether they're Shimano or Campag is there, something saying Fulcrum 7/Shimano' or 'Shm' rather than 'Campagnolo' or 'Cam', etc ?

A Shimano freehub should look like thisfreebod.gif

And a Campag one like this19125_183723.jpg

It's not something as simple as that it is Shimano you've got but you're not lining-up the wide tab on the cassette with the wide groove (there's one wide one, seven narrower ones IIRC) on the freehub body is it ?

  • No they haven't got any tell tale signs on them such as Shim or campag - something for fulcrum to think about perhaps! Just went to my local shop and picked up some Shimano wheels instead and they fit perfectly so it was the wheels.

Thanks very much for the assistance though - I appreciate it - still getting my head around the finer parts of the technical side!

    Cheers

was the freehub made of aluminium as apposed to the usual steel? if it was then I think only a Dura Ace cassette will fit the splines
if they are shimano compatable wheels they should be marked M10 somewhere on the box or delivery note
