Hi,
I would like to try out a few xc races and see if I get into it or not.
I know to get the most out of races I will probably have to get a hardtail, I just don't want to splash out loads on another bike and find that xc racing isn't my thing.
I have an Orange 5 and I'm not sure if its worth using it? or just buy a cheap hardtail?

Deffinately worth racing on the five - theres a profesional chap who races one so it should be suitable0

Have a go, see how you get on! If you like it, and want to take it further, can always get a lighter bike.0

Thanks for your opinions you've both been very helpful, I will give it a go and see how I get on.0

A friend of mine races on a 5, I'm sure you won't have the heaviest bike on the starting line anyway!0

I did the Bontrager Twentyfour12 on my 5, sure I wasn't the fastest up hill, but on the down hill bits, nobody got close to passing me.0

Was that because they were already in front !!0 -
:? No, it's because I was going faster than the weight weenies on their carbon hard tails. Some did pass me on the uphills but I also passed a lot of people on the descents, and quite often, any one who was close at the start of the fun bits, was nowhere to be seen at the bottom!0

Did Bristol Bike Fest 12hr on a Five - throw some lighter/skinnier tyres on it and you'll be fine.0
