One question.

My headset bolt inside was screwed so a new one is being put in. Its made me think of what else i should personally give a going over tho as it was a random suprise when it came loose? Ie Pedal bearings or cracked tyres etc.

Anyone got a list that they think would be good for like a personal mini service i should do. As long as it requires standard multi tool use, a bit of grease / lube / degreaser im willing to have a go. Should i regrease my hub bearings or is that a bit too technical for me?

Cheers

It is limited what you can do with a multitool - so for now check all bolts are tight, make sure it is clean and well lubed. To go deeper you will need more tools such as cone spanners for the hubs etc. But if the bearings feel smooth (turn the axle by hand) and there is no play (or just a fraction in a hub) then leave alone. Check everything periodically.
  • so as and when stuff starts to feel a bit broken or less operative i should get a new tool kit?

I'd recommend getting one now, and be prepared! Wiggle do fairly comprehensive sets for around £40 with all the basic tools to strip the bike. I'd also recommend a book by Leonard Zinn. Will be the best £50 you could possibly spend, and your bike will last a lot longer. Plus you'll get that money back in even basic service charges over the course of a year.

Keep ichecking, maintaining and servicing and it will last years.
  • il have a look into it then. Ive got the Haynes Bike Book which is great but i definately need the tools for the job
