For recording and analysing results, previous routes, the weather, total kit mileage, I'd recommend Sportstracks. Windows only though.

I have the 205 (PC world still have them in at £49 in some stores, but you have to ask them to check their internal stock lists as they are "discontinued" and not on the shelves. Find a manager and ask for a proper search!).
Can people on this thread consider the 205 / 305 model too when posting software? Cheers0 -
I use Ascent on the mac - it's very good and integrates with google earth etc. to give you nice routes coloured by speed (or cadence if you have it - I've only got a 205) so you can see where you're slow ;-)0

Tracklogs for the 205/305. Excellent mapping s/ware.Rich0

Is all this software free downloads, or do you need to shell out even more money on top of the 705 and the maps?
I'm pretty keen on getting one of these, but I just keep seeing the £s racking up. How much would I need to spend for the unit, maps and decent training software?
Cheers

sports tracks is brilliant, its what ive used with my 205 and now with my 705 as well. Its a free program as well!BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Bowman Palace:R - FCN 1
Cannondale CAAD 9 - FCN 2
Premier (CX) - FCN 6
Premier (fixed/SS) - FCN30 -
Is sportstrack better than "motionbased"? Dou you still need to load any of the Garmin stuff?0

SportTracks vs Motionbased
SportTracks i think in a lot of respects better than motionbased. SportTracks is a local install though not online like MB.
With the addition in the newer versions of an SDK for plugins, lots of new functionaliy has or is being released which makes it a great bit of kit for free.
Reporting is pretty good to in there, uses google maps (need to be online to do this) only thing it doesnt have (but currently is in beta as a plugin for sport tracks i belive) is a player, so you can watch yourself ride round the gpx course and your speed and heart rate.
Only reason i use Motionbased is to upload rides for friends to see, or link rides on forums, but you can do that in sporttracks with a plugin but need webspace to upload them to (simple though compared to motionbased
Maps for the 705
The basemaps are useless for the 705 in the UK , so you will need to get more maps if you want the mapping (but why buy a 705 over a 305 if you dont unless its for the power meter functionality with 3rd party meters)
If you have some of the garmin Metroguide maps you can download those to your garmin without needing a code, and there is a free program that enables routing on the device for those maps (like a tom tom in your car can)
Otherwise you need to buy a pack with the maps in, wiggle do a road performance pack which includes the maps for the garmin for 330ish i think, or get the maps seperate.
Picked mine up for 240 from Amazon without the maps, and thankfully had some Metroguide maps (thanks to a free peice of software called Metrowizz or Metrogold for $6 if you have v9 they are now routable), might be able to pick up a cheap set from ebay if you dont want to pay out for the maps, V9 is current version i belive.
City Navigator NT maps are around 70 i think, but if you get them on DVD you would need a memory card to load them onto (i didn't to start with but 200MB of the uk onto the devices 500mb onboard, but being paranoid i wanted it off lol as i dont use smart recording so filles up about a meg an hour)
There are some free maps (can't think of the name but OpenGarmin or something), but they dont include routing , so wouldnt give you turn by turn directions on the fly.
Also a word of warning about the UK topo maps, from what i've seen they are poor compared to the OS maps :S0 -

I'll second this - Ascent very good & user friendly.

SportsTracks works fine with the 205/305 (I actually use a 305).
It's a results recording program rather than route planning software. For the mac I'd also go with Ascent.0 -
Ok...
Downloaded (for a 205) SportsTrack. Doesn't seem to give a speed line (speed over route). Just gives a line with route, and time/distance.
Have a "Training Centre" cd, and a leaflet for "Motion based" inside my box, as others have mentioned above.
Are all 3 the same in basic use? Can anyone list the basic differences, bullet point?
Do any allow detailed analysis of all the parameters? I wanna overlay speed graphs for the same route to work each day etc. Which do I download!!!
Cheers.
(dont wanna download all 3 if they are pretty much the same)!!0 -
I would say you will need to install Training centre even if you use one of the others...
Why?
- Create, schedule and transfer workouts to the 705
- Manage courses to send to the 705 (can just about do this with Motionbased)
- Keep a copy of all my history incase i want to switch to another app and it doenst except exports from other apps (very unlikely)0 -

SportTracks with the overlay plug does this, can comppare as many rides asyou want, compairing speed, HR, cadence etc...
Might be able to do it on motionbased, not sure ifthats a paid only feature0
