Lycra or Baggy?

I used to wear all lycra when I went out cycling but then slowly changed to just wearing baggy shorts and the odd lycra top. I am going to be buying some more shorts and am unsure whether to get lycra shorts or just bog standard sports baggy shorts!

My question is, what are the advantages of wearing lycra instead of non lycra clothes? :D

Doesn't snag as much, it might dry out slightly quicker but people can identify your crown jewels (if they want to). I tend to use lycra for that very reason, plus it seems to mildly annoy some other MTB'ers which is a bonus.

People think you're going to be fast if you wear lycra.

This can be a disadvantage if, like me, you aren't very fast.

Of course, it could cut the other way too. if you're showing everyone that you're carrying a little extra weight they might assume you're going to be slow.

Or refuse to ride with you.

Baggy with lycra built it. 8)
  • Lycra with baggy on top!! Or if I'm feeling brave, just the lycra. I compare leaving the house wearing lycra to how it must feel to 'come out.' Awkward, yet at the same time, liberating....

Endura Humvee 3/4 do the job well.

Unless its a nice lady in which case it has to be just lycra

Endura Singletracks for me - basically shorter Humvees.

Apart from the few bits built into them and my gloves, NO lycra is allowed on my steed :D

...ahem - except for my lycra surfing rash vest...

  • I am definitely a liner with baggies over top but my g/f refuses to wear baggies or a loose top...not that I am complaining...

Weirdly I just feel a bit more protected with baggy kit

Hehe, just got myself a rash vest last week for windsurfing. It's very "figure hugging"

Baggies on the MTB, Lycra on the roadie! (colour co-ordinated with the bikes, of course!)

I tend to wear lycra under baggies on the MTB and CX. I have a few pairs of baggies with fixed liners and must say they suck  . Separates are the way forward.

Something to consider: I just bought a pair of bib-shorts. Does that make me a bad person? :?:

  • BAGGY
Me like trials biking me do
  • Baggy all the way. I don't do lycra or skin tight. Partly cos I'm a bit of a chubster at the moment and it wouldn't be a pleasent sight.

It's either baggy camo shorts or some combats.

I go for Some nice high quality Lycras with normal baggy shorts over the top.

My bum isnt hard enough to deal with my ridiculously hard saddle yet
And im not washing them so i dont care i have to wash two sets of shorts everytime i ride.
  • I l leave my lycra shorts inside-out over the top of my locker door at work. Everyone has to walk past a sweaty arXe pad, and I like seeing them look uncomfy with that!!

At least there are no skidmarks! (yet)
