Hi, i'm having major traumas with my front derailleur, i cannot get it to put the chain on the big chainring, i have checked websites, a bike manual and i'm having no joy. i have adjusted both higher and lower screws, experimented with different tension in the cable, changed position of the who derailleur and how it attaches to the frame. no matter what i do the front mech will not shift the chain onto the big ring. its a shiman sora groupset. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
(no doubt its something obvious).

If you've followed the instructions on park tools and have still no luck then it might be an idea to hit up your lbs.

take the bike into your Local Bike Shop, if possible see if you can watch whilst they do it, practice make perfect when setting up gears.

i'll have one last go tonight, if no jot local bike shop it is. thanks.
  • Try removing the cable and then use your hand to push the FD over to the large ring while rotating the pedals. If this takes your chain over to the large ring then the problem lies with the cable tension or with the H adjustment. I'm assuming that you haven't replaced the Bottom Bracket with one of too long a length and changed the chain-line.

i havent replaced the bottom bracket, or any parts. when riding i noticed problems shifting to the big ring, and i tried to adjust it and all hell broke loose. i'll give what you suggest a try, hopefully it will work!

I once decided to fiddle with all the things you can fiddle with on a front mech in order to get rid of a bit of chain rub when in the big ring.
Spent hours (really) faffing about and the bike was needed the next day so , stuck in one gear, it was off to the LBS
After some stick  it was fixed in about a minute.
Sounds like cable tension but I bet its a mm tolerance either way in the top and bottom screw adjusters, either way....
    Spring!
