Rim or new wheel dilemma...

Hello people,

Appreciate this is probably a fairly commonly asked question, but just want to do a quick brain dump before I plough through the archives. Any thoughts/suggestions welcome to help with my direction though.

I've ridden many a happy mile on a pair of Ksyrium SSC SLs which are about 4-5 years old. Not one problem with them in that time, but at the weekend the inner part of the rim has started to slpit away from the rim sidewalls on the rear wheel (at a drive-side spoke).

My cheapest option is to get the wheel rebuilt with a new rim, assuming mavic still make a suitable replacement - cost £100 or so including the work - but then I've still got the same old hub/bearings etc.

While I'd obviously prefer to keep costs down, it has raised the possibilty of a brand new wheel, or set of wheels.

I haven't been paying much attention to what's available these days, do you have any thoughts on suitable replacements? I'd be happy to get some more Mavics if they were the best for me but I'm not fixed to a brand... I get the general consensus that other manufacturers have maybe overtaken Mavic in recent years.

Priorities are reliability/strength, stiffness and weight, and should look good too (yeah ok I want it all)! For a complete wheelset I'd be looking at a price point anywhere between £400-£600.

Ta muchly in advance!
Graham

Personally, if the hubs are in good shape and you liked the wheels I would have them rebuilt. Maybe some new bearings along with the spokes and rims. Much cheaper than
new wheels. Then again if that big wad of money is really burning a hole in your pocket,
well, go for the new ones. I think I would get them rebuilt anyway, for a spare set, even
if you decide to go new. As for what wheels may be "better" I doubt you will ever get
an answer on that although you will certainly get a lot of suggestions and people swearing that this or that is the "best". If you race I would go for a really nice set of
hand built tubulars and use the repaired set for training.

Cheers Dennis, that makes sense - it would be a waste to discard them completely, and having them rebuilt would give me time to consider new options so I didn't rush into anything!
I will probably stay with clinchers though.

OK peeps, I would welcome any suggestions on what is the best to go for these days, also any particular shops that would be good to look at.

Edit: I see Wiggle are doing 20% off wheels this month!!!

    Ta, Graham.
