I'm off to Glentress camping and MTBing for the 1st time in 2 weeks with my bro n sis in law...really cant wait!!!
Anybody else gonna be there???!!

i'm trying to start to get kit together but i dunno what else to take...

We've got all the tools etc etc sorted but we need some of the following and was hoping you could recomend some kit :)

1) cheap innertubes? just incase
2) What chain lube?
3) energy stuff for while riding...
4) a small pump, preferably with a pressure gauge
5) anything else you can recommend?

were trying to keep stuff on the cheap, cus fuel is costing quite a bit :(

Also, about the trails, my sis in law is a noob at MTBing and was wondering if we should steer clear of any of the trails? she's physically fit so thats not a problem, just not as confident on a bike as me and my bro.

Cheers
Ben

    Hey Ben....

Between yourself and the other boys, the kit is about there.... just normal kit for a day on the trail, multiplied by the number of days.

    The trails.....

You can download the trail maps and get loads more info here

The black route is quite a technical mission (especially if you take the extended version including Deliverance...see trail maps), but not actually all that steep... some pretty gnarly looking rocks, but could mostly be rolled (maybe avoid that on the first run for your sisters benefit!)

The red can be rolled down for the less confident riders, but the opportunity to get airborne is there for the more adventurous, and is generally regarded as the most fun of the trails (can get quite busy at weekends though.)

There are also blue and green graded trails (couldn't tell you what they are like!) but also a green graded skills are (with blue and red options) which has a bunch obstacles aimed at giving confidence on the type of natural and manmade obstacles on the trails themselves.

Then there is the fun park (freeride area) which has a bunch of tabletops, doubles, some wallrides, drops (of various sizes), skinnies, funbox, step-up, shore sections, hippers etc.... all in various grades which are well signed.....

Maybe take your sis to the skills area first to get her confidence going, then go for the blue first, moving up to the red and maybe the black.

The hub cafe at the bottom also does superb cake and coffee, as well as proper food as well.

    Have fun....

    Maybe see you there.

Don't think I've ever seen a midge at Glentress - they're more a West Coast / Highland problem...

  • cheers for the replies :)

    Gettin really excited now :D

goin to pick up my bro's new steed today...kona stinky '08....and to get some extra kit :)

I think the red route is something we're all looking forward too, i personally want to hit the longer black route as i enjoy more endurance type stuff tho. But i think the skills park and the green route will be done 1st to increase my sis's confidence :)

we be stayin at the rosetta camp site which looks awesome....and not too far away :D

with lube....is wet lube def the best to get? something i've never been sure about :(

    Cheers again.

I would recommend that you head to the Spooky wood red section (great view) which is a scenery uphill to start with and then a lot of exciting downhill routes. - check out the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvGvXJT05x8

Regarding about the midges, I go to Glentress 3 times a week and there are plenty of them around which they will bite you if you stop for a short break. They normally peak at early morning or late evening... So get Midge Repellent just in case.

Wet lube is the best for more than few hours cycling. I would recommend it...
