while being stuck behind a tracktor with a grass/hedge cutter today i was attacked by countless numbers of the little blighters. i guess the cutter destroyed a nest of them and they were out for vengence, unluckly for me i was'nt cuckooned in a glass cab. while making my escape swearing and shouting i only suffered 5 stings, 3 on the calf, 1 on 3rd finger and 1 lower back.

along the trail a bit i pulled over and covered them in anti-sting cream from my mini first aid kit and carried on with my ride. what i did notice was the more i sweated the less the stings stung so i ended up with quite a good and speedy 30 mile workout, although very sweaty heh :) oww my finger!

when I was a kid, four of us were out playing. One of the boys slipped and fell into a gorss bush....and started with the aaaaaah....I initially thought it was the jaggy bush that was the cause of the aaaaah, until wasps filled the air. He had put his foot right through a wasps bike!

We were all stung many times, but the lad in question was stung loads more than the rest of us..... It was horrible

yeah it's not nice but wasps are nothing compared to bees, i'd rather have 10 wasp stings to a single bee sting.

any photos of this new wasp bike? hehe

I used to live in france with 120 students in the summer and we had communal showers which were freezing cold by the washing up area. A wasp stung my back side whilst i was in the shower, i came running out in front of lots of people doing their washing up
Why use brakes? Falling off is a much quicker way to stop

I was drinking a can of beer in the garden last year and to my surprise a wasp had climbed inside while I wasn't looking, unfortunately the beer it had drunk seemed to make it aggresive so when I put the can to my mouth to take another drink it had a right go at my tongue, managing to sting me three times on the tip!
The best cure was to drink a few more beers and keep an eye out for any more wasps trying to freeload my alcohol!!!!

That's really dangerous!! If the wasp stings the back of your throat it will swell up and you won't be able to breathe! Then you'll die, breathing's pretty integral to life. Best bet in the garden is a glass!!

counted 4 stings on my calf, which has developed into localised allergic reaction. swollen below the knee to me toes. only managing about 2-3 hours sleep till the itching wakes me and i'm walking round all dozy from the anti-histamine pills. it's slowly getting better though hurrah :) oh yeah i hate wasps! :x

I got 16 stings on my right and 18 on my left hand not too long ago... They swelled up something chronic and made riding my bike rather difficult..

But then I do keep bees

Was you wearing deodorant, lynx etc?

Oh and a little tip, if your being harrased... Get your ass into the nearest set of trees, foliage etc... They simply cannot find you then, but don't stop.. It's just the most effective way of out running them...

yep a couple of squirts of lynx "africa"

as soon as i saw i was getting surrounded by them i was out of there peddling like mad.

Well just so as you know, the main ingredient of most deodorants, especially Lynx is actaully sting pheremone, it's does vary slightly from bees to wasps, but it's more identical to wasps than bees..

So yeah, shouldn't imagine that helped your case

When we were at school, a friend of mine got stung by one of the large clouds of wasps buzzing around the bins. His arm swelled up remarkably, and he still has a large mark on his arm now, over 12 years later!

I guess the wasp must have passed some kind of nasty crap from the rubbish in the bin, to his arm. Nasty buggers.

you sure about that Papa? kind of sounds more like some urban myth to me? i mean you'd think the people that make deodorants would'nt have ingredients in them that would stop people buying them?

Well they're not gonna mention it are they! It's a well known fact among those who know, that wearing deodorant around bees and wasps, whether your going close to them or not, will attract attention.
So when they're pestering you, and you start to move about frantically.. That's it, they're angry and start stinging.
You see it in parks where family's etc are just chilling out... Some are fine whereas others get harrassed... Could be down to the food they have with them? Yeah, but only in the last 6 weeks of the season, the rest of the time wasps have so much food they don't give a toss about what we have.
Also, this was coming from a bee expert and the bee inspector said it was right too, when it comes to these guys, it's not what they know about bees and wasps, it's more a question of what they dont know.

tried not wearing any smellys on todays ride through alot of bee infested bracken thorny type stuff and i did notice that they were'nt flying with me for a bit like they usually do, just flying straight past as if i was'nt there. seems like what you said works thanks :) i'll be stinky from now on though heh
  • I got stung on the upper part of my eyelid yesterday.
I was out at first light getting a pre work ride in and as I descended a hill in open countryside a wasp appeared inside my sun glasses and wrapped itseld around the
sunglasses frame stinging me immediately- little blighter.
I quickly whipped the glasses off and the wasp escaped to freedom, but not very ppleasant. Could have been a nastier sting and not actually painful, just had to make a story at work about taking on a gang of shinheads and you should see the state of them blah blah!
