front & back tire combo's

whats the best combo of tires for speed on hardpack & dry conditions. ie. kenda block 8 on rear and a semi slick (almost) on front? or the opposite?
would you get more power down with the grippier tire on rear? and would you lose handling grip with a slicker tire on front? :?

I put these on for a trip to the Alps last year (mostly XC) and didn't take them off till abot mid October they were so good. The side knobs gave good grip in softer conditions and they are mega qck as you'd expect from a semi-slick.
