Frame & fork £450 - can £300 finish the bike...?

Hi

If I was to spend £450 on my frame and forks do you think I could get the rest of the parts to complete my custom build for under £300?

It is worth noting that I already have my Avid Juicy 5s, spd pedals, seat and am taking the wheels and tyres from my old bike. I know this is very much a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question but I simply want to keep within budget and have a decent hardtail for general use (local trails and singletrack) which I can upgrade at a later date as and when I feel necessary.

My main reason for this is because I can’t find anything that I like off the shelf and have already gotten some parts on my old bike such as my Juicy 5 brakes which cost me £180 so don’t want to have them sitting on my old frame! I have done some research and am thinking of the On One Inbred frame and the Rock Shox Revelation 426 Dual air forks.

Any comments are appreciated.

stick reba sl on the inbred, you'll struggle to do a drivetrain and finishing kit for £300 i think, but i can probably be done

You can get Deore groupsets quite cheap, much less than 300.

OnOne do decent stems for 20 quid, headset such as an FSA orbit is another £20. Bars and seatpost neednt cost any more either. Just make sure it all fits.

£165 for LX V brake groupset. Just make sure the brake levers and shifters are separate and it will do you fine.

I have an Inbred 456 and it is an awsome frame, and it would be sweet with Revelations as i think most people reccon 130mm is just the right amount of travel. I prefer mine at 140 though, so it might be worth waitng for the 09 U-Turn Revs which are 140mm. I would then get everything else second hand as frame and forks are the most important bits to get right.
  • Shop around for parts and you should manage to keep in budget. Wife would kill me if she knew how much I'd spent !
As said above the On-one stems abd bars would keep the cost down and you could get the headset from them too.
The 456 inbred is great !

Thanks for all the replies lads! Well i've def decided to go for the frame after hearing what everyone here has said and also the guys at my club recommended it when i asked them last night.

I looked about there and i should def be able to keep within budget by buying sale items or secondhand. Chain Reation sell parts for silly prices so shouldn't be a problem! As someone already said, my main concern is getting the right frame and then fork. Everything else can be easily changed or upgraded when its needs to be.

I think I will prob go for the Reba SL as one of the guys last night said there wasn't really a need for the uturn forks for what we do, also 130mm is more than enough for me I think.

One last Q - i've noticed a lot of people mix Shimano and Sram when it comes to the drivetrain - is it not better to keep it all the same? I was edging towards Sram to be honest even though I run Deore at present...

I have never used Sram mech's and shifters on my bike (have had a go on a mates several times and i think Shimano is better) but i think the perfect set up i have found so far is Race face chainrings, Sram chain (think mine is PC9 something) and 08 Shimano XT front and rear mech's. Runs perfectly now wheras before with Shimano rings and KMC chain i had all sorts of problems with chain line, chain suck etc. A lot of bike shops have reccomended Sram chains to me and i have to agree. So in answor to your question, no you don't need to run all the same, as long as everything is 9 speed it is all compatible.

What frame are you going for, the Standard Inbred or the 456?
  • Hi, I'm going to go for the Inbred 456. I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do with regards to the bike over the past week. Went to my LBS and had a look at some bikes but didn’t see anything I liked 100% so decided that I am def going to get my custom build underway in the coming weeks.

The frame is decided but still unsure about which forks to go for. Around £300 is my budget for them but there is so many to choose from! Noticed a lot of the guys have Pikes at 140mm with the uturn. I like the idea of a long forked hard tail but have never tried proper suspension forks so have no idea if the 130mm would be good for me? Will do some reading up on the different forks and that before making my decision. Don’t think I need uturn anyway.

I am also definitely going for a Raceface crank with 2 chain rings (no granny ring) and want an e-thirteen bash ring on it as well. Here is my proposed build list so far:

    Frameset Inbred 456
    Fork Undecided (130-140mm)
    Headset ?
    Stem ?
    Bars Easton ea70 monkey bar
    Brakes Avid Juicy 5s (bought)
    Shifters XT Rapidfire
Cranks Shimano Saint Chainset HollowTech II M800 or RaceFace Evolve DH Double Chainset
Bottom Bckt Raceface or Shimano (£30-40 budget)
Rear Mec Shimano XT Rear Derailleur Shadow M772 (longcage)
Front Mec XT M771 dual pull
Cassette Shimano LX Cassette 9 Speed M580
    Chain SRAM PC951 Chain 9sp

    Any more comments?
