I have a set of 08 shimano xt shifters and am trying to remove the optical gear display, after removing the two small screws at the topthe display still won't move, what else needs to be done before it will come off?

instructions bottom right on that doc.

looks like you need to shift them so the pointers are pointing left before removal?
  • Could someone enlighten me on what is meant to replace the optical display once it's off? Got an old LX M570 shifter- checked Shimano website (used variation on above link) and it shows how to remove and install, but once removed surely there should be some plate or something to re-attach as the 'insides' are open to the elements?

XT's come with a small disc that you screw on, I've done mine, much neater now.

  • Was it a separate piece that came with the shifters new?

Anyone know where spares can be found?i've tried googling but must be using the wrong terminology

  • thanks- tried their website earlier- without pictures I'm not sure if the described items are what I need e.g.

"Shimano Spares - SL-M570 main lever cover and fixing screw"

I assume is the whole of the main 'cover' piece. None of the other spares seem to describe what I'd need

According to the parts diagram on the shimano website there is no part number for the cover, i'd give petra cycles a call in the morning.

  • Yeh thanks i'll give them a call in the week if no-one else knows- Lookig at the shimano parts diagram, only the standard pieces are listed- that's why I was interested to know if they come with a spare 'tab'/'cover' when bought new. I don't see the point in having removable windows if there's no patch for the hole that is left- so there must be something available

my xt shifters that came with the bike had the blanking plates behind the display itself. try taking it off and having a look behind it

The covers arent available in the UK yet, spares are always well behind the main items in the Shimano range.

Stick the part number in there. Often the last digits will suffice cos if you put the whole thing in its different on the ultimate pursuits site to shimanos number so lose the first digits.

My XT shifters came with the cover behind the optical bit so don't worry

Yup behind the optics, look much neater on the handlebars.
  • I've taken the display off (and to pieces)- there's no blanking plate hidden away :?: not within the display section / plastic arm in which the display mechanism resides.
Must be different to the new XT (its an older LX). But it must be possible to get a plate otherwise why have teh display removable?

This is the optical display inners

I cut out a piece of carbon sheet to cover mine, used one of the screw holes and some double sided sticky tape. Other option is to use some thin acrylic/lexan.

  • Having the shifters in-board will probably be far better so it might be worth trying to bodge something- maybe like you said, cut out some kind of patch, maybe from a 'frame protector' or something

I'd amazed though if it's the case that the display is removable but the shifter isn't really usable once it's removed- what a waste of time and engineering. There's got to be some plate available- I just cant find it!!

Are the covers not screwed to the underneath side, I'm sure I've seen mine there, but not having wanted to remove them I could be wrong :(

I think the lower groupset shifts might not come with the covers (my very old STX-RC ones had removeable indicators and no covers and I think my 2007 LX ones didn't either.

The new XT ones definitely do but I think that's more to do with the fact they have the option of two mounting points to let you swap brake lever positions. In one of the mounting positions you can't use the indicators. Just because you can remove them doesn't mean that Shimano intended you to remove them permenantly.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
  • I got this problem as well but mine are basic deore shifters on my 07 rockhopper when you remove the optical plates there is open circuitry looking at you dunno if i can do anything about this........... do you ?
