  • NB @ John - prescribed Atorvastatin as its based upon the most comprehensive field data, whih after all is how the effectiveness of these drugs are measured. Personally, being a sceptical type, I do not think they are the panacea for Western dietery/lifetsyle stupidity that they are made out to be. I just *know* that they f**k me up and make me feel unwell in a way that you don't notice over time, until maybe it's too late or you stop and suddenly the difference is obvious.

It's a subtle drug, and has subtle effects despite the hype. I would just encourage people to challenge and quantify the benefit vs the risk as much as possible. I don't gnore my GP, then neither do I accept everything he tells me without explanantion and justification.

You're right to say that statins are not a panacea, but given the huge levels of cardiovascular disease they still have an important place in benefitting the population's level of heart attack/stroke. Nevertheless for one person to have a heart attack/stroke prevented another 20+ have to take the drug for no benefit and the (in your case) possibility of significant side-effects. The reason I posted was that I was concerned you might be making an uninformed decision - that obviously isn't the case and you have a good GP who will help you make the right decision for you. More power to you and good luck with the PBs
If you haven't got a headwind you're not trying hard enough
  • Thanks John. I'm trying to present it in such a way that doesnt suggest eveyone taking statins shoold stop, more that they might want to research and discuss with their GP if they are seeing some slow acting and mild debilitating effects. These may of course be nothing to do with then drug, but the clock as ever is the ultimate measure.

The last time I saw my GP he tried to scare me into taking them by telling me I'll probably be dead within 3 years if I didn't take them. Nice.

I told him I'd be dead within 1 year if I did. Two days ago I got a telephone call from the surgery wanting me to come in and review my medication. I told them there was nothing to review as I was only taking 75mg aspirin a day. " You must come in" they said. I declined politely.

Are they on some sort of commission are something?
