Hi ,Thanks to all for previous help with my confusions over which bike to buy.I am now looking at an Ibis for sale in the states on e bay and also on e bay an intense 6.6 which is fairly local and looks great.
I would please welcome any views on either bikes.I don't intend thrashing the bike .I am something I think of an advanced vet being in my mid 50's !! I want something that will serve me well on the north york moors/dalby/dales and lakes areas.
I also like the look of the trek carbon fuel the orange 5 and the cannondale rush.
Thanks,Steve.

Your choices are all over the place if you'll forgive me for saying, from lightweight Marathon bikes to fairly beefy 7" AM bikes.

For general MTBing in the areas you name, a good spec 4.5 - 5.5" suspension bike is ideal. So I'd avoid the 6.6 as being a bit big, I'd avoid the Rush as being a bit lightweight and consider the following:

    Orange 5
    Ibis Mojo
    Trek Fuel
    Giant Trance X
    Marin Mount Vision
Cannondale Rize Carbon 3 (it's available in white and red as well as that green)

Again thanks this helps me .Another Q please the choice between carbon and alloy for the frame which is recommended? Also I hadn't considered the cannondale mentioned so thanks for that.Regards,Steve.

Both are good materials for a frame. Both will resist small knocks and both will be written off by large ones (alloy tubes dent and carbon composite delaminates).

Alloy is cheaper and carbon lighter. You pays your money, you takes your choice. Carbon also has better vibration damping qualities but this is of less value on a full susser than a hardtail.

By the way, If you do want an Intense, they are bringing out a new, as yet un-named, trail bike which looks fantastic IMO. See http://www.intensecycles.com/2008/ If you name the bike you can win one!

Generaly unless you need less weight for raceing i would go for an alloy frame unless you have money to burn..... and the law of deminishing retruns comes in with the carbon frames

Regarding my previous post, when I say large knocks I really mean serious impacts - don't want to give the impression that either are fragile.

Thanks I have put in a bid for the ibis a bit worried about transport costs and taxes but will see.Otherwise I am looking at the rize or the trek fuel carbon. The intense looked such a great bike but maybe a bit extreme for what I need. This feedback is very helpful.Regards,Steve.

Gosh this seems a lot on top is the vat even for a 2nd hand bike.Seems like I will have to review.I was prepared to go up to £2.5 k for the bike roughly what the seller wants but with all the added cost its probably not worth it. Cheers,Steve..

The duty on bike components is a lot less than full bikes (4.7% IIRC). So you can buy a Mojo frame and a fork from the US and build it here if that's what you really want.

    Have you considered a Heckler by the way? Full builds from £2000 - 2300 http://www.santacruzbikes.co.uk/bicycle ... ckler.html
