I currently use a Polar S720i with protrainer 5 software.I dont race and just enjoy my cycling. After each ride I download my information in order to record my improvements and keep a record of my rides.I am thinking of getting Cyclingpeaks software.Does anyone use this and what are their thoughts.Am I just wasting my dough if I am not racing or recording power output. Thanks

Cyclingpeaks/ WKO+ is great if you train with power because it calculates and allows you to easily monitor power-related measures like FTP, NP, IF, TSS, CTL etc. Acronyms described in more detail here: http://www.cyclingpeakssoftware.com/power411/

I haven't used Protrainer 5, but from a look at some of the screenshots and Polar's description, WKO+/Cyclingpeaks will offer you little additional insight. Also it won't allow you to download workouts to your Polar for guidance while you're doing them which it seems Protrainer 5 will if that's important.

Summary - Get Cyclingpeaks/WKO+ IF you have a powermeter but otherwise probably not a worthwhile upgrade

Are there any other software options for use with powertap / edge 705? (What are their merits/disadvantages?)

Considering renting one for 10-12 weeks and wko+ looks a little pricey for this purpose...

    Many thanks.

  • Yes. Try Sportracks:

    http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/

It's free to try and you can donate if you like it.

Then install the Training plugin from here:

    http://www.fernandomaldonado.com/power.html

It will then calculate stuff like TSS, IF, FTP etc from your Garmin's power data, or more accurately directly from your Powertap/iBike CSV export (the Garmin can't average properly). You can monitor your FTP over time etc and do all kinds on analysis without being over the top.

    The plugin is free.

The downside is that it takes a bit of figuring out and configuring. Once it's set-up and you are used it it, it's very good.
  • Here are a couple of screen shots as a simple example of the above.

    Maglia,

Many thanks. I had heard about sporttracks - but not the training plugin - looks like it makes all the difference.

    Cheers.

  • No problem. Here is one more by the way. This is part of the new Training plan part of the plugin..it's still a bit flaky but does allow you to summarise various ride data in numerous ways (and yes I have some garbage data in there..)

Also try Golden cheetah at http://goldencheetah.org/ also free, but I must say WKO+ is the gold standard, and it's not a lot of money compared to paying for a powermeter, but it is this kind of software unlocks the really, really cool stuff about monitoring power, which is watching, predicting and controlling training loads.

Plenty of discussion on this at the wattage google group.
    Good luck,
    Scherrit.
