Using the garmin connect site I have managed to upload some of my routes, My question is how do I view and download any routes that have been uploaded by other people, The Garmin site says this is posible, but I can't see where.

I don't think it's possible to download them yet. I think (but haven't used it!) the older MotionBased web site allowed that to happen. You can share a ride with someone by making it public and then sending them the URL, but that's hardly clever technology!
The things missing are a gazetteer of rides and the download / conversion to TCX format to allow you to follow the course.
Still, we're doing well to have Garmin Connect working with reasonable performance, so can't expect miracles

Garmin admits GarminConnect is a work in progress.
You can always share GPX files via bikely.com. There's a vast number of them there.
To import a GPX into your 705, navigate to the GPX folder on the device via Windows Explorer or the Finder (depending on your platform) and put it in \Garmin\GPX or the Mac equivalent (sorry Mac users, I'm horribly out of touch with Mac stuff)John Stevenson0 -
Thank you John
Your Info is backed by an email I had from Garmin this morning, as follows

Hi Adrian,
Thanks for contacting Garmin Connect.
We do not yet have our community database available. It will be released when we launch the full version of Garmin Connect in the next few months.
Let me know if you need anything in the meantime.
Best,
Ginger
