Just wondering what people thought was the best frame for 4X
and crankset as well. so obviously light and strong but i'm normally quite light on my cranks so i was thinking either the new shimano SLX's or XT's?

xt's and then something small maybe with a little travel out back, like the transition double of nikolai UFO DS.

Choice of cranks depends on a few things, budget, what frame they are going on, how smooth you are and how big you go.

Frame wise, budget ? Full Sus or Hardtail ?

well i'm riding a HT at the moment and i'd want another one really and i'm wonderin what people think the best out there is regardless of price

crank-wise they'll be on a giant STP at first and i don't want to spend too much (closer to £100 ther better) and i'm smooth and don't weight much but then again it is 4X any ideas?

Look at the '08 Commencal Absolut 4x. Its a frame only bike but Commencal are famous for building bikes light but extremely strong. Its recommended for 100mm travel fork. It also features an adjustable head tube. Im sure it'll be perfect for you.
Learn on a Hardtail or be crap forever!

yeah they were an obvious choice but i was wondering if i need the strength when XT's are lighter and cheaper

I look at it this way: Shimano XT is XC and Trail, the SLX and and Saint for beasically the riding you suggest. Peace of mind.

XT is a fantastic crank and most of the time you can "get away" with it

until you land a 4X jump wrong or smack a rock hard enough and rip the pedal threads

Hone would be a great tough/light and good value crankset to keep a 4X bike lighter

SLX is looking very nice...but some time off yet

and Saint has sold out for 2008...until the new 09 Saint shows up

of course some shops may have cranks left in stock, but the distributor (madison) is all out

  • 4X tend to be very light on bike so really jump gear is totally wrong. A proper 4X bike feels like s sports car when compared to a jump bike. Though I have raced a few times for fun on a jump bike and had a good time. You don’t have to be the fastest there to have a great time :)

yeah 4crossers are light but i can't afford to splash out on light kit that'll only hold up until i case a landing
