Hi,

I've seen some good deals on RockShox Reba and SID forks, and I'm a little confused as to what I might be best getting.

I need 100mm travel - the geometry of the frame is based around this, and I like it. I mostly trails and cross country. There are some tough (for me!) climbs on and off road round here so I'd like some form of lock out on anything I get.

So, the options - and the price makes these interesting:

RockShox Reba SL - Disc only - £229
RockShox Reba Team - Disc & V brake - £249

I'm having trouble seeing much difference between the SL and Team, although the Team includes the poploc, which costs £30 to buy separately anyway. Actually it looks like the difference is the lowers are magnesium on the Team, so I guess saving weight. I'm a reasonably heavy rider, even when fit, but my understanding is that these forks are pretty sturdy so I shouldn't see any issues?

The Disc only Team is an extra £100 - it doesn't really seem worth this just to get rid of the minor weight difference the V brake mounts will add. Am I missing something here? If it's just weight, I think it'd be better coming off the rider rather than the bike!

I guess really I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'm not making a stupid choice here, and that the unused V brake mounts may look a little odd/ugly but won't actually affect performance?

Cheers,
Steve

Reba, with or without the V mounts (makes no difference to the performance), whichever you like/ can afford, they're all very good forks.

I have the Reba SL disc only with the poploc, the differance between the SL and the Team is that the SL has an internally adjustable flood gate by the way of using the supplied hex key in the rebound adjuster, not really something that you really need to adjust alot TBH.

Can't comment on the SID's but the reba is a great fork for the type of fast XC that I ride.

In the end it was the price that made me go for the reba's over SID's £190 from merlin at the time.

Although the new SID's look tasty

Current 08 SIDS are 28mm stanchioned, the Rebas are 32mm stanchioned. The very newest SID, branded the 09, is upto 32 and is much stiffer.

The Reba Team, as above has the external floodgate knob. It also has a lighter crown. Both have the same magnesium lowers.

Poloc is available in two flavours - the standard and the 'adjust'. If you get the former, it allows you to lock the fork, but you cant set the compression anywhere inbetween on or off like you can with a non poplocked fork (poplock forks have a sprung loaded assembly in the damper). But the adjust version you can set it.
