Hi there as the title says im trying to decide on which bike i should buy. I went down to Hawk cycles near me and asked the assistant to reccomend something. I said I would be cycling off road in the country perhaps doing a few drops and rough cycling through woods and a bit of road use. Here is what he recommended:

Coyote michigan, he said this is the one i should go for.
(£240 @ 470USD)

I believe this is the same bike with a few more details

AMMACO XXR10 ALLOY 24 SPEED, which he said i should go for if i want to stick to my budget.
(£200 @ 391USD)

These do not have to be the only bikes to choose from, if there is anything else on the site or elsewhere available within the uk then please recommend them. Note Id rather not have to put the bike together but would be willing to do so if needed. Look forward to any replies, thanks.

A Carrera Vulcan would be a better bet than those 2 I think, as it offers better VFM. Halfords have 10% off all bikes over £100 now too!

The bikes you mention are all saddled with pretty awful suspension forks - flexy and short travel.

Are you in the US or UK? If UK, as above, try Halfords and the Vulcan.

seconded for the vulcan, much better bike for similar money, wih the 10% off it would be 270 quid and represents loads more value for money. it would be very expensive to upgrade to discs in the future on the other bikes so its a bit of a bargain

If that ^^ is too much they do a V brake model for £250 (minus the discount).

Thanks alot for the replies! Bit dissapointing that the specialist couldnt give me anything better than the coyote for the price i asked, which is surprising as they used to be part of the raleigh factory here in coventry. Another surprise with halfords being mentioned as i always thought they were a rip off! I will have have a look at the vulcan and mull over it a bit, i dont suppose any of you guys have owned one of these or tried them?... I know im pushing my luck but any other reccomendations?

Forgot to say the guy at the hawk store said the frame is what you are really buying which is i guess is true. I dont mind spending extra later as long as i dont have to buy another frame with extra bits that wont be used when i come to upgrade again.

Used to sell them (albeit a while ago!) - one of the best bikes for the money, came 3rd in bike of the year award 2007.
