Pinnacle Peak 3.0 or GT Avalanche 2
chorus of ruin

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to decide between these bikes
Pinnacle Peak 3.0 2008
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86837
GT Avalanche 2
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86674
the common opinion seems to be that the GT is the better bike, but to me the pinnacle has slightly better components (rock shox forks).
I know the GT has the respected brand name, but what are peoples opinions on pinnacle bikes? I really like the look of this one, I've sat on one and liked the feel, but just wanted some reassurance as to the build quality ect. This looks like a great deal to me.
Im going to be using it for some commuting and general light XC and forest trails.
I'm looking to pay around £400, max 450. I know an extra 100 quid would buy something a lot better but I’m on a tight budget! L My essential components are hydraulic brakes and lock out forks (both the GT and Pinnacle tick these boxes)
Any other suggestions welcome. Im looking to buy from evans cycles as the only other store close to me is halfords and I don’t want to buy from there, and everyone I've known has had a great experience at evans.
Thanks for reading!

Both bikes are fine for the money - some budget Suntour forks actually work better than the budget RS ones! A nice reduction on the Pinnacle though, so if you like the riding position, go for it.
There is a lot to choose from around this price - might want to look at the Avalanches big brother, the 1.0, the Carrera Fury from Halfords (ok, I know you said you didn't want to buy from there, but some are really good, and the Fury is simply unbeatable for 460 quid!) and the Genesis Core 1.0:

thanks supersonic for your speedy and informative response!
Ill check out the carerra...honestly not given it a thought
I'm not really against halfords per se, I just didnt think they offered good value on their bikes! Ill pop down tomorrow though..
any one else got any opinions/experience with a Pinnacle Peak?
The chap in evans seemed to like them, but I guess he would lol0 -
Lol, he would! To be honest, most of the pinnacle hardtail range I think does not offer the best value parts wise - however the one you link to is a good deal.
The Carrera has a £180 RS Tora 318 fork bolted on the front, a fantastic piece of kit!0 -
Another option maybe

I saw it somewhere for £425, but can't remember where now..."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
Such a great price point now isn't it? Can hardly go wrong!0

If my LBS stocked 'em, I'd have one right now!
EDIT: I was talking about the Fury btw, realised how the post could have been confusing!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
