Adjustable road stem - tweaking to suit conditions
Hi,
Having extended the rides on my Cannondale R700, including some commuting duties, I've started to get a fair bit of stiffness across my shoulders - and I'm thinking that a change of stem (to lift the handlebars and reduce how extended I am) would be a sensible idea. I quite like the stretched position (as I'm long in the body), but think that lifting the handlebars might be advisable.
Ritchey do an adjustable stem (see the link below), which allows the stem angle to be changed and seems to be a good compromise while I fettle with my cycle position. Does anyone have any views on these - especially if you use an adjustable stem to tweak your bike to suit the ride/conditions (i.e. flat for a TT, raised for a commute, etc).
Cheers, Mombee.

I got my Audax with one of these:

Or here (reduced):

At first I was unused to road bikes and the sizing needed some tuning, hence the adjustable. I used it at about 25 degrees for a good while but more recently dropped it to 10 degrees after becoming a bit more flexible bodywise, so I'm now trying out some fixed angle stems. I'll keep the adjustable spare, though as it could come in handy.
As a comparison the Outland weighs 249g against 184g of the basic fixed stem I'm trying out.
Keep the adjust bolt nice and tight or it creaks a bit on them hills.0 -
good info , thanks0

I used a Look Ergostem on my TT bike for a while, then once I had sorted out my position found a suitable fixed stem to do the job. The possible advantage of the Ergostem is the ability to change to stem length as well as the height.

Been half tempted to invest in an Oval r710 adjustable stem, as the default 100mm on my Felt is a little short and it would be nice to be able to get a little more upright.
Taking account of a steeper angle than the current 10 degrees on my flipped 100mm, which will eat up some reach of a new adjustable, does the 125mm oversize sound like a better bet over the 140?
Incidentally, just short of 50 squids appears to be the going rate...
