boiling water & bottles

Concern in the news today about the chemical BPA found in most plastic drinking bottles reminds me to ask what is the best way to clean our bike drinking bottles. I often pour boiling water over the drinking spout and swiirl some around the bottle to kill off lurking bacteria. But apparently boiling water releases nasty phenol-type chemicals and we could end up drinking them.

So what do others do to keep our bottles clean and put warm drinks in for winter rides?

I think they're different plastics. My gf has a place at Oxford for Biochemistry, and explained it all to me, but i forgot

But plastics used in bike bottles (as long as it's a decent bottle), will take longer to for the chemicals to break down as they have a different purpose to the disposable bottles. And, you generally can taste the chemicals in the water (ever had that funny tasting water from the bottle in the sun?) that's why you shouldn't use cheap bottles.

I don't clean my actual bottles all that often, i clean the lid section on a weekly-2weekly basis, with the other dishes, but i only put water in them, so i don't see a huge point in constantly cleaning them.

Thanks Neeb, I might look out for those.

I guess it's time I threw away the bottles that came with my first Dawes S Galaxy 15 years ago. It's like throwing away your first teddy :(

I use Milton (or whatever the supermarket own brand equivalent baby bottle sterilising solution is) to clean my bottles. Works a treat. Best thing though is to rinse them out ofter use so they don't need cleaning.

I put mine in the dishwasher and they come out as good as new. Its much better if you just use water in the bottles though - less to go 'off', but I always clean the bottles after each ride. Cant see why anyone wouldnt really ? Yuk !

and I still haven't followed Neeb's advice and bought BBB Hydratank bottles. Guess I'll have to now...

I wonder if colour makes any real difference?
