Vented are two very thin rotors held together with an air gap in between so they cool better. The vented rotors are also floating which means they are attached to a spider by rivets that allow the braking surface to expand and contract separate from the mounting spider.

The floating rotors are exactly the same except the braking surface is just one solid thickness with no wafer thin air gap.

Save yourself a ton of cash and just get the floating rotors.

I haven't had mine that long but had some pretty tasty descents and they've held up well so far. love the vented but thats how they came on the bike so dunno if i'd buy them otherwise.
vented - to keep them cooler on the looooong alpine descents, no need for any uk use really (apart from the bling)
floating - to help stop them from warping due the heat.

I wouldnt bother with the vented rotors. Ive only got the floating ones, and they pulled my bike to a halt in France every time!
