Inner Tube Explosion - Why?

I was changing my tyres over earlier... Nothing new there. My Nokian Tubes fit the XC pro tyres fine and I was just pumping away as normal, I noticed a VERY slight S shape in the tyre, but I assumed that was from where it was stored (pushed into a box that's slightly too small).
I always feel and move the tyre at numerous points when pumping up but at about 23psi my inner tube blew up, leaving me with a nice 5inch gap that blew open with such force it blew my tyre off the rim!

What could I of been doing wrong? The inner tube wasn't caught under the tyre, it wasn't twisted and I didn't over pump it. The tyre only had a slight twist, not an uncommon site when a deflated tyre is on a rim.

    pfff....

I dunno, but that nice star shape would suggest manufacturing flaw (weak spot) to me.

That's what you get for using a Presta valve.

That pressure doesn't sound very high to cause such an explosion assuming the tyre was seated properly. If this hasn't happened before I would think it was just a dodgy inner tube.

  • it'd be quite a laugh to see if you can repair it with multiple patches!
