I did not mind so much last week when a Orange 5 passed me and I did not catch up on the downs, after all it is this years acclaimed machine. Today though a Specialized Hardrock passed me and I thought I would catch him on the way down. After all thats my thing zooming past other bikes on my meta 5.1.1 as soon as gravity is on my side. As the skin peeled off my face because of the G force I became convinced he must have flown off the edge the mountain side because he was nowhere in sight. However to my horror as I zoomed frantically towards the car park I caught a glimpse of the bike mockingly cruising the car park at the bottom. Doh! Just goes to show a great rider more than makes up for any fancy gear!

Yup, unfortunately it's not what you ride, it's how you ride.

A Hardrock will be fast on the descents anyway, due to it's weight ;)

  • reminds me of when an old roadie rider was infornt of me a while back, top of the hill i thougght, Here we go, I'll have him down here!! Lo and behold i was in 27th peddling like a good un and he was freewheeling away from me!
did catch him up at the roundabout, had a nice chat as we rode the next bit!

  • I love doing that to people. I'm not an amazing rider, but I have an '05 Diamondback M40 that cost me £250 and I'm probably quicker than 90% of people I come across on the trails, the majority of whom have spent a lot more than I have (not that there's anything wrong with spending as much as you like). Time for an upgrade in a few months though so could maybe make that 95%!

i am guilty of having spent a bunch of cash on great bikes but am no better at riding them because of it.

i regularly get my ar$e handed to me by people on the kind of webster bikes i wouldnt even pull out of the canal!!
  • I ride a hardrock.
I like to make "whoosh" noises as I pass other bikers.

You should ride with my friend Miles, no matter how fast I get he's always one step ahead!

Cornering confidence generally increases with time and experience. This pattern continues until it falls sharply and suddenly.

  • I wouldn't have let that Orange 5 past me ;) That's worse than being passed by a Hardrock :P

Used to pass people on my old hardrock, just changed what bikes I ride!
  • Do these Hardrock things have magic powers then?

On a serious note, blasting people on full sussers with an old hardtail is quite good fun ;)
