Being a MTB novice, I have lots of questions which hopefully you experts can answer...
Starting with:
What is the difference between hydraulic and mechanical disc brakes? How do they work differently etc?

Basically Mechanical disc brakes are cable operated like V brakes whereas Hydro brakes have fluid like a car braking system and are more powerful in general.0

hydraulic is just like a car brake......

Cable disc brakes work like a V brake - except the pads squeeze a disc rather than the wheel rim.
Or are you asking what the difference to the user is?0 -
have a read of parktools and then you will not need to ask the basics."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Great link nicklouse, thanks!
So how often do hydraulic brakes require servicing / maintenance and is it worth the hassle over cable brakes?0 -
i'd say hydro brakes require lots less maintenance and fettling, once they are set up they are good to go (provided set up properly in the first place)
cable brakes require regular adjustments.0 -
Not that hydros don't have problems - bleeding, no bite adjustment on lesser models, pistons that stick etc.0
