I will go first ...I think they could develop suspension with 'look ahead technology' much like the look ahead compressors used in music production. Sensors could scan ten feet down the track and relay information on best possible rebound, compression and damping settings.
Off course these could be manually overidden for those rebels among us!

More ideas please!

I can't see derailers lasting much longer as they are a real weak point on mtbs.
I would expect to see more bikes with gearboxes made in to the frame, first for dh bikes then trail use when they get lighter

A USB port, everything else seems to have them, charge your ipod or phone as you ride :D
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

  • Looking good so far ...a 'Belt driven bike' with 'internal gears,' 'a look ahead fork'' and a 'USB Port' any other ideas, if we keep going like this we could have designed a new bike by the weekend!

    32" wheels.

Oops sorry got carried away (on the band wagon :lol::lol::lol: ).

a change of gears has to be the next thing please please please. i often think of any alternatives but not thought of anything yet. dunno about belt drive. cars have gone back to chains instead of belts apparently? i've no problems with chains but I'm not sure about belt drives *at the moment* depends on how the gears are and the life of a belt.
ground reading suspension would be nice too. auto lockout on roads etc etc.
  • you've gone too far my two fruit and veg would surely get bruised with 32 inch wheels think off the stand over height, i've only short legs!

hmm how about an auto type gear box where the ratio is automatically decided by measuring force and speed or something....

or simply heated handle bars :D
  • lights driven by some sort of dynamo attached to the hub or rim of the wheel?

or a foam insert instead of pneumatic inntertubes like in motocross racing

internal transmission would be nice. Having working gears/chain exposed to the elements is a maintenance disaster. Like on the Millyard bike...

Also... a hardtail with a removable rear triangle that can be replaced with linkages+shock that would make it into a full suss :)

    meh.

not seen anything new here yet. Phone/laptop charger is there, CVT is there. belt drive is there internal gears are there. hub and rim dynamos.. bigger than 29" wheels.. heated grips..

i will add shaft drive with internal gears, and 2 wheel drive already done. as is hydro, air and electric shifters.

    come on something new please.

you mean like the sort that already exist....... :)

EDIT: My replacable rear triangle idea is new!! pah.
  • H.U.D Display for your cycle computer/ Garmin GPS, projected onto the inside of your shades like on High end cars winscreen ( absolutely OTT but it must be new in mountain biking and you wouldn't have to take your eyes off the trail, No? )

yes but i'd like to see them in a usable form not just expensive concept/prototype stage
  • Anti vibrational Handle bars and stem. I do this already by packing the bars and stem with a featherlite foam like sheet. In the handlebars it is pulled right through with a coat hanger untill a couple of feet of the sheet hang out each side then I cram it all into the bars until it is packed. Could be done on a whole bike actually ...like a bell filled with foam it cuts down on vibration and noise.

  • Regenerative braking.
Instead of turning inertia in to heat, the brakes could engage an electric generator/motor which then charges a battery ready to power the motor/generator on the next hill.

The technology is around already, just not at a weight, size or cost to make it suitable for bikes.
I am a mountain biking god.
    Unfortunately, my bike's an atheist.
  • Infinitely variable belt drive.

Use a belt drive and then replace all the chain rings and sprockets with a wheel at each end with variable diameter. To get lower gears the wheel at the cranks shrinks and the slack in the belt is taken up as the wheel at the back expands. To get faster gears, the wheel at the crank expands and the wheel at the back shrinks. One fixed length belt, no derailleurs, no chain slap. It could all be made as an aluminium or plastic casting, or even carbon for the weight geeks.
A dozen or so overlapping curves to form each wheel, expanded by spring pressure, reduced by cable pull and all controlled by one lever. Infinite variation, just as much range as you get now, and a definite weight saving. Certainly reduced friction and a more efficient drive...

Damn, that actually seems like quite a good idea!
Proved by testing to be faster than a badger.

Ceramic braking systems like you get on F1 and triple posh road cars. Because they're much more powerful and can take insane levels of heat without fading you'd be able to use tiny rotors, so they can be lighter.

I can see it now, Avid Ceramics, £900 a set and 19gms lighter than Juicy Carbon, someone will buy them.

Hydraulic drive-trains with the crank attached to a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic "motor" built into the rear hub, with a valve controlling flow you could have infinite number of gears between to fixed points and it's far more efficient than a chain.

P.s. I should probably add I know nothing about science or engineering, this is utter guesswork

How about a crazy idea - disk brakes that can actually get wet and not be treated like a porcelein vase?
