rear mech cable tighten

hiya folks, just a quick one, when i tighten then cable thru my rear mech, i was told to put the chain on the smallest rear cog,where should i have the cain on the front chainrings?

    Oh if you have a rapid rise rear mech then it is all the other way round for the rear :wink:

    the easy way to find out is this.

    disconnect the wire and let the mech (front or rear) go to its natural position. that is the position you should attach the cable.

    rapid rise rear mechs natural position is the Big cog.

    Why do you need the chain on these cogs in particular?

    cause that is where you need to set them up from.

    read parktools or the manuual.

    If you put the chain on up at the top, the gears will be backwards wont they?

    Sorry if thats a dumb question but would a rapid rise rear mech go down gears when its supposed to be going up?
