Rock Shox Tora 302 service?

I've got Rock Shox Tora 302 forks on my 07 RockHopper, I bought it almost a year ago and have been riding on them for at least an hour a week since then. I'm really not impressed with the shocks as the most travel I've seen is around 60mm and I can only just manage to get 10% preload. The travel seems stiff, progressive and judders slightly as if it's drying out. I've read that coil shocks should be smoother and the travel should feel more constant.

I weight roughly 11 stone (70kg) so maybe I'm a bit light for the coil?

Should I bother getting them services professionally, attempt it myself and checkout which coils are in them or just replace them with something better?

sounds like it has needed a service for some time.

doesnt sound right. As nick says, or a lighter spring (or both)
  • i have exactly the same problem chalgo, i weigh 9.5ish stone and get 60mm travel tops (even on big hits) and about 5-10 mm of sag. i asked about new coil's at my LBS and they said its about £30. a bit steep considering the forks cost £90 new...

Some places offer a coil swapping service. They can take a while to bed in. Remove the spring and cycle the fork by hand - does it feel stiff, or bind?
  • well ive been running mine for about 3 months now, and thats averaged about 40 miles per week.
how would i remove the spring?

look on the sram website and download the service booklet.

Im running toras with the standard spring and i get all the travel i should be.

I weigh 65kg and carry a camelback with a few tools when ridong so total i cant be adding more then 70kg to the bike when I hop on,

    Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
    Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

  • ive looked at the sram site and reckon its a jobbie for tomorrow. if i need to apply some new grease to the spring, will Pace RC-17 fork lubricant be ok? its pretty thick stuff so itll stick, im just not sure if its ok to use in rockshox forks...?

p.s. sorry for hijacking the thread chalgo

    hi guys.

I was thinking of a Tora Coil 80mm for dirt/4x. My doubt is: if i want can i internally change the travel to 100 or 120?

    cheers!

Hard to say until you have opened them up and had a look at the spacers.

I have tora 302's on my hardtail.

They are clearly on the lower end of decent forks, but they have been pretty good.

I weigh about 80kg and after fiddling with the pre-load, got 25mm of sag and get full compression (cabletie round the stanction always ends up about 10mm from the very top of the stanction)

maybe adjusting the pre-load for a lighter rider, or change the spring.

They are always a bit stiffer in the cold, but a good few compressions usually eases them off.

  • I weigh just under 14 stone, and they have never "bottomed" out for me. so i guess the stock spring is pretty sturdy.

as cee said, they are bottom end forks, but i dont know any better so dont believe im loosing out.

deffinatly sounds like they need a service if they "judders slightly as if it's drying out".

my forks actually now feel alot plusher now ive had them over a year and iron out a few teething problems i had with them.
