Cycle to Work question

Hi newbie here looking for some help.

My employer does not currently have a cycle scheme. I know they could sign up to Halfords, Wiggle, Cyclescheme etc, but is it possible that I can find a bike anywhere and request them to buy it and we sign an agreement. Or do we have to go through one of these schemes that restrict you to certain approved retailers?

Thanks.

As I understand it you don't have to be restricted to a specific retailer, but most companies do it that way because they can dump all the admin onto the chosen retailer and not have to worry about it themselves.

Incidentally, only use the cycle to work scheme if you trust your employer - there's no guarantee of them selling you the bike cheap at the end of the arrangement (if there was it'd be hire purchase and wouldn't get tax breaks) so you're taking it on trust they'll do the right thing!
Even if the voices aren't real, they have some very good ideas.

Agree with Shodowduck. You could even download the paperwork from Wiggle and use that for your own scheme.

Cyclescheme probaby offers most choice as most LBS's will do it, only thing is discounts are usually unavailable because Cyclescheme charge the dealer 10% comission - swings and roundabouts really.

Thanks guys, this is exactly what I was thinking of. Use the Wiggle forms as a template and then I can get the bike anywhere and keep the paperwork issues to a minimum.

The firm isn't too keen as they are worried there will be lots of paperwork, but if I can have all the paperwork prepared in my own time all they need do is sign it, write the cheque and remember to not pay me so much.

Yes, the main thing they have re: paperwork is the salary sacrifice. Shouldn't be too difficult for them. You can provide all the contract paperwork.

A chap at my place of work wanted a folder, Halfords couldn't provide it so are buying one in from an LBS, not sure how that works but I'd say if you are tied to a retailer who can't get you what you're after you can push for a resolution.
    "Impressive break"

I think Brompton are refusing to supply Halfords (and/or cannot meet demand). Halfords do undertake to buy in any bike, and will use other LBS's, but I gather not everyone at Halfords knows that, so persistance is required sometimes.
