Hardtail definatley for this money . You will get a bike that will last a while and you can push further. Look at the Rockhopper/ stumpjumper debate or a Rock lobster. Really nice Spec - loads better than you'd find on a full suss, unless you go second hand.
Can't fault it either.
There are better rides out there, with better specs, but my theory was to upgrade when things needs replacing.
Find a good local dealer that'll let you take a few bikes out for a while. Then buy the bike from them! Most will give some discount so the price will be comparable to the larger chains ans iIt'll be worth it for the customer service.

Great frame, Juicy 5s, good Fox fork, nice finishing kit.
Climbs brilliantly, does singletrack as fast as you dare, but quite nervous downhill.
Light too.

For £1000 you could get a pretty good bike.. hardtail-wise you'd be hard pushed to beat this focus:

Full suspension wise this looks pretty good!

Or you cold try for the likes of Trek, Giant etc....

Sadly no, I'm just always amazed by the bargains they have
Whats the general consensus on the Spesh FSR XC comp?
You won't find a better spec than the Focus Super Bud anywhere, but availability is limited and there are no professional reviews - although you can find a thread on here with a couple of users who have bought one in recent weeks.
Ram bikes might be worth a look, their budget full-sussers have been very well recieved and they're very reasonably priced.
My shortlist is, in order,
3)Spesh FSR XC Comp
2)Focus Super Bud
1) Giant Trance 3
Any more for any more?
On offer at the minute for £999 get in there!!!
:roll:

Superbud = 12.7kg
Trance3 = 14.02kg
But the super Bud looks like a lot of bike for the money...

Excellent bike, great frame and great finishing kit.
A 'burly' hardtail but more of an all rounder.
Always gets cracking reviews by all!!!
try and get to a demo day if you can. its a brillaint way of seeing what bikes you get on with on proper terrain, rather than a shop car park!!
If it's April, it might rule out the Super Bud on the grounds that Wiggle may not have any to sell by then still.
But any of the bikes on your shortlist are an absolute steal when you're only paying £500 or £600 for them, eh?
Just take them off before you use the bike and put them on ebay - where you should be able to sell them for around £90.
Use that money and add a bit more to buy a new Reba or Revelation (at a net cost of roughly £110 - 140 more, depending on your fork choice).
Really? I just got a Spesh FSR XC Pro from Evans Cycles through the bike to work scheme (max £1000). The RRP was £1299 but it was in the sale for £999 (2007 model) and that was no problem for the B2W scheme.
