strange chain skip..

ok, i had some problems with my chain skipping, had loads of suggestions, in the end i decided to use it as the perfect excuse to bling up my bike, so i replaced most of my drive system, i did chain,cassette,crankset and bb (but the bb needed doing anyway!) and adjusted the rear mech according to park,and now my chain skips worse than ever, if you put it on a workstand and spin away it glides nicely through all the gears, but the minute you get on it an put weight on to it its slipping and skipping and randomly changes gear when it wants to, usually at the most inconvinient moment like starting from traffic lights, and crunch crunch its gone down or up 3 or 4 gears!!! and it does this in nearly and chainwheel/casette combo you can think of! im ment to be racing this at chicksands next month and am getting a bit frustrated with it now, any help would be most appreciated!!!!

H what is the bike? and the the chain is actually being moved over the cassette?

hiya, its an 06 cove hustler custom build, the casette and drive stuff is shimano deore lx and the crankset raceface. the chain appears to be moving over it as i can be riding along then all of a sudden its changing gear on me!!!

Ok, put the bike into the center gear on the rear and then while watching the rear mech press the frame down and see if the mech is being moved acroos the cassette. if yes then the cable routing needs looking at.

Fiddle with all of your chain links, in my experience, things like that are often caused by stiff links.

Have you given the chain a good degreasing?

I just put new cassette & chain on my machine and decided to leave the factory coating on the chain, bad mistake, the links felt stiff and the chain acted as a muck magnet. I left it in degreaser for a couple of days and you should have seen the sh1t that came out of it after one reasonably dry 6 mile ride, the degreaser had gone black (from orange).

I also changed the gear cable, been out today for a quite hard ride, loads of steep hills and it's running beautifully now (might want to consider changing the cable and outer as well).

hi all, thanks for your suggestings, done the weight on frame etc and nothing moves, its right random, im almost at the point of buying a new mech/cable/cable outer and jus replacing the lot, am halfway there already!!! altho not convinced it'll work, its actually been worse since i put the new stuff on, i dont want to admit defeat but i can feel a bike shop visit coming on!!!

Is it definitely chain slipping? Could it be the freehub (seeing as you've replaced almost everything else)

its happening when im pedaling do you think that would be the freehub? i had that out by accident but its all back in now in the right places etc

apparently the way to check is to gently rock the cranks round, (ie small movements in each direction) if it is the freehub then it'll slip not under huge load.

Sounds like freehub to me - especially as you say you had it apart. The pawls wear after time and don't always engage

but if it is changing gear as said in the first post then it is not the freehub all that happens there is that the free hub spins.

what is the hub anyway?

yeah its definagely changing gears!!! went back out on it, and its very definately doing its own litle dance and changing gears, but there doesnt seem to be a pattern to it, its in every gear right through the whole range and only ever when under load, i think i may have to loose some weight,is the only conclusion im coming to here!!! !!!

might be an idea to get the hanger checked out you may have knocked it.

just an update in case it can help someone else out in future, i got fed up and took it to the shop after going thru everything i (and the helpful folk on here ) could think of, turns out it wasnt an expensive problem or a major one, was simply a slack cable with a kink in it, £1.80 later and its perfect, no skip,nothing! i'd forgotten how good this bike is to ride, thanks again for all help from the forum tho
