A little bit OT really but are these non-electric readmills any good?

The wife is after one to compliment the X trainer.

Any advice appreciated,

Chris :)

You get what you pay for, I'm afraid.

I spent just under a grand on a decent electric treadmill, with a high-rated motor (continuous-running rating, not peak power, if you're going to be using it for 30 minutes or an hour continuously)

This thing is essentially a bit of rubber carpet stretched across two rollers...

    I suspected as much...............

Thanks for the advice Andy, appreciated :D

She's looking for a rowing machine now which seem to be cheaper than treadmills and, so I've been told, give a far better workout.

    Cheers

Chris, in terms of all-round exercise there's nothing better than a rowing machine. That's the good news. The bad news is that the vast majority on the market are even more shitty than the treadmill you highlighted.

There are only two rowing machines worth buying. The best and undisputed market leader is the Concept 2. The only good alternative is the Waterrower. Both will cost about £1,000.

Thanks Harry. My gym only uses concept 2's so i guess that shows the quality. TBH thats way out our price range though, especially as I don't know if she'll keep it up. I very much hope so and I'm giving as much encouragement as I can but I remember the demise of an excersise bike a few Years ago......................

I thnk we're going to get one of those cheapy Tesco things in the interim and if she's still using it in 6 months time i'll happily pay out for a really good one as there's nothing more worthwhile spending cash on than health in my opinion 8)

    Cheers

  • I think that there are places that do lease arrangements on fitness equipment. That way you could try a Concept 2 or similar for a couple of months before buying. If you buy a cheap alternative that doesn't give a good workout (poor action, etc) then you won't use it anyway.
