does any one know of a racing bike's average weight (approx) in KG
and can anyone recommend the best company to use?? and also what type of box to use?? (i have no transport to get to where i could buy a box) maybe a company can bring the box or something?? any recomendations on how to pack a bike safely...???

sorry - can't help with the weight.
when i've sent bikes, i've gone along to my local bike shop and asked for one of the cardboard bike boxes they get bikes delivered in. awkward to carry home but not impossible. also, try and get the spacers (what's the proper name?) that go between the dropouts.
i've sent by parcel force (it can all be organised on-line) and i think it was just under £25. it does depend on how much the package weighs in total.
just make sure it's well packed - pipe insulating foam around the tubes, bubblewrap everywhere!0 -
Get your bathroom scales out to be on the safe side, but 10kg would be an average bike weight (22 lbs). Plus the cardboard box will be another couple of kg so allow 15kg to be on the safe side.
Get an old box from your LBS - they'll be only too happy to help (esp if you shop there regularly) as it costs them to dispose of the cardboard anyway.
Anything other than Parcelforce 48 hour service is prohibitively expensive. £25 should cover it but check on Parcelforces website.0 -
I sold a bike on ebay last autumn and sent it, via Parcelforce's 48 hour service, to Stoke on Trent (I'm in London). I used a bike box procured (for nothing) from my LBS. Total cost was, if memory serves, £18. Added: Bronzie is spot on, the package weighed 15 kgs.
Be warned though, Parcelforce has a limit on package size which means the box has to be less than 1.5 metres long. I don't know if my box was under this limit or not as my local Post Office didn't have a tape measure to hand. It was borderline for sure.
No problems with the service though, the bike was delivered to a very happy buyer within 48 hours.0
