Wide-fitting shoes (<£100)

My feet are "super" wide, so narrow shoes tend to be too long by the time I find ones that are wide enough.

Which brands of road shoes come quite wide fitting?

It all depends how wide "super wide" is.

Sidi do make some of their shoes in a wider fitting - "Mega" IIRC, - but it may just be wider than the normal narrow Sidis.

Shimanos can be quite wide, depening on the style. Remember that Shimano shoes are undersize by between half and a fullsize, so if you take a 10, you'll need to go for a 10.5 or 11.

Northwaves are supposed to be wide also.

My Feet are about size 8 in length but about 10 in width. Most of my shoes have a large gap by the toes.

I feel your pain - I've ended up with two sizes too big Shimano's because only their 'posh' road shoes come in a wide fitting. Chain reaction seemed to have the best choice, e.g.

I expect you'd still need a size up to allow for the famous Shimano accurate sizing system

specialized seemed to have a lot more room in the width than any other brand I tried on (SIDI, shimano, northwave & diadora)

I also have very wide but flat feet and struggle with any shoes.

I bought the entry level spesh ones - sport road I think - they are very comfy - sidi were the narrowest and I couldn't get in them - after the specialized I think the northwave and shimano were ok with the diadora being very like the sidi in fit.
  • I have pretty wide feet as well and i've found that specialised are just right for me if i get the size up (apparently they come up small on the length) so i have a pair of size 44 (i'm a 43 normally) BG comps and they're very comfy. in fact i like them so much i that i want to get a pair of their top of the range ones for summer.

I too suffer with "wide feet"

CARNAC ( try bourne sports )
or Northwave aerator 3's - i know tim at echelon cycles . find it via our website - had some on for less than a ton..good saving as well

they are both wider than spesh ...& i have both carnac & northwave & the NW's are a touch wider..

Another vote for Specialized. My feet are so wide I had to have my ski boot heat stretched to fit, yet the Spesh shoes seem to fit perfectly provided I go for the next size up. I'm 11 but take a 12 in spesh.

What are the Spesh trivents like? I know they are "triathlon" shoes, but I only want them for the summer.

I find Carnac shoes to be comfortable and wider than average. In summer I wear Shimano sandals (they have shoe plates) which are super comfortable and cool, literally, but perhaps not so cool metaphorically.

Specialised are really wide, I didn't used to fit into Clarked when i was little (Elephantis were only ones which fitted) and some running shoes don't fit me.

+1 for Specialised. But dunno how much they're hype about body fit is true.

  • 2 get back to the subject of wide shoes.
I normally take a size 44 (uk 9) shoe but have got very wide feet (EEE as they say in US) and like you have to go up one or even two sizes dependent on manufacturer.
So Sidi size 44.5 Mega and Specialised BG size 44 fit me. The specialised are wide. I could probably take the Sidi mega 44 but one of my feet slightly bigger than the other and it was better to get the big size as I thought my feet will swell when hot. I also have a high instep. The strap on the Specialized shoe is at its limit.. 2 clicks and tight and also not as comfortable.. doesn't seem in the right place. Dont get me wrong, nice shoe, done over 4500 miles in them last year and mostly comfortable but at the same time could be improved on. Only just bought the megas while in the US (easier to get there) so jurys out on those although so far so good and no numb feet even in the cold weather. The megas have a slightly wider sole to the Specialized and also for a 3 point cleat fitting more manouverability. They also cater for SPD unlike the Specialized. I bought Megas genius5 with plastic sole, while the specialized have a carbon one. I dont know if that makes a real difference, both very stiff shoes. The default footbed for the Sidi has a slightly higher arch which irritated me slightly until I put a different one in. The Specialized are supposed to cant the feet more than the Sidi and one can order different insoles.
For a slightly cheaper shoe which I liked, the Pearl Izumi Vortex road shoe..they have a big toebox also and their sole is very stiff. I think this is discontinued now, but you may get a deal on New Old Stock.
Anyways all the above mentioned are alot nicer to the mid 80s stuff with rat trap pedals I used to use.
  • Northwave. V wide, v comfy.

I have Spec carbon BG as my good shoes and a pair of Exustar as my day to day (commuting) shoes. I have wide feet and find the Spec pinches a little. The Exustar - (i got them in Canada when I was there on holiday) are wider. I note that Exustar are now sold here.

I have some shimano mtb shoes in a 46 but normally take a UK10 - EU 44 in shoes.
I wanted to change to road shoes so the wife got me some shimao r151 for xmas in a 46. Good fit length wise but tight even before velcroing them up. They were not the wide version though. I have since changed them for some specialized carbon comp shoes in a 45 which fit fine for both width and length.
    Still thinking!

I too have very wide feet (length size 7, width of an average size 11 according to the New Balance measuring machine) and have tried all the brands, including the supposedly wide fitting versions, mentioned in this thread without any luck.
I currently have a pair of Lake CX160's which are by far the widest cycling shoe I have ever tried.
  • +1 more for Specialized.

btw, I just bought a pair of the pro road shoes as they fit me better than the s-works. the s-works shoe seems to have a slightly narrower fitting at the toes and pinched my feet.

I tried all the Specialized road shoes and they're all narrow. In fact I think I tried just about every shoe on the market last year and went with a pair of Sid Mega's. The only shoe I found to "come up wide" in normal sizes was the Northwave Revenge. The Shimano 215 wide fit is nice as well.
