a knocking sound is never a good thing to be honest. first thing to do is check if your headset is tight enough. hold the front brake then rock the bike faorward and back and see if you can feel any undue movement.
next would be to check that the wheel is tight enough and the hub isnt the offending article.0 -
you did swap your crown race over from your old forks?
you did read the how to on parktools?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

i took the metal ring off the top tube of the ol;d forks and the bearings and transferred them to the new forks if thats is what you mean???0

Just checking, you do have space between the top of the steerer and the top cap?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

yeah theres about 5mm between the top of the stem and the top of the steerer and the screw has pulled the forks up into the bottom cup0

is it the fork?
Ok have you made sure there is no play in the headset? and it is still making a noise?
what forks?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
