Ksyrium M10 - spacer needed for Shimano 10sp cassette ?

I've just bought some Ksyrium Elites with Shimano/M10 hub but am a little confused if I need a spacer between the hub and cassette.

None was supplied with the wheels - or was there, there's a rubber ring on the freehub : is this a 'spacer' ? I was expecting 'spacer' to mean a metal shim/washer ?

The multi-language instruction leaflet which came with them isn't a lot of help, has some ambiguous diagrams.
One is headed Mavic/Shimano M10 and appears to show a spacer in place
One is headed Campag M10 and appears to be telling you to remove the spacer
The text says 'Compatability with Shimano 8/9 speed cassettes: place the positioning spacer on the freewheel body'

8/9sp Shimano cassettes are narrower than 10sp aren't they ? Not wider ?
i.e. to fit a 10sp cassette to 8/9/10 wheels I'd need a 10sp spacer which is a mil or so thick

So I'd expect if I was running 8/9sp on this Mavic hub I'd have the Mavic spacer and as I want to run it 10sp I'll need the Mavic spacer plus a 10sp spacer ?

thanks

  • I bought a pair of Elites last October and tried to fit a Shimano 10sp casette. It fitted but it wouldn't tighten up. I did some research and found out that a 3mm spacer is required. I just phoned the wheel supplier (Chain Reaction Cycles) and asked them where my spacer was. They sent it to me FOC.

    Hope this helps.

If you are fitting a 10 speed 11t shimano cassette to an early freehub you have to fit a 1mm spacer at the back or the cassette will not tighten properly because the 11t sprocket has a slight rebate .

The Mavic M10 hub is hardly an early freehub (the ones which have that issue date back to the 80s!) The issue is a different one, and due to the fact that the Mavic freehub body is wider than the Shimano standard (in order to give space to fit a Campag spaced cassette).

I was afraid I was in the situation steelride reports, but it turns-out that I did have the spacer after all, rattling about loose in the bottom of the box
    - it's a big box and a little spacer !!!
(dunno why Mavic either don't tape it onto the freehub or put it in the plastic bag with the spoke tools....)

Haven't actually fitted the cassette yet, I'll have a go tonight.

Not sure where the little rubber o-ring which was on the freehub goes, or what function it has - presumably it's freehub - o-ring - spacer - cassette, but I'll soon see.

    Thanks

it has no function ......usually put on to HOLD the spacer in place...during delivery

i left it on once to see what it did.....it perished

The Shimano 10sp cassette is actually narrower than the 8 and 9sp ones. This is due to a recess in the back of the cassette hence the need to fit the 1mm spacer when using 8 / 9 / 10 freehubs. If using a Mavic freehub you need both the Shimano 1mm and the Mavic 3mm spacers for 10sp.

Just to echo and endorse what John. T says - you will need both spacers to fit a Shimano 10 speed cassette to your wheels - the thick one that came with your wheel and a thin one that should come with your cassette.

Great, John & Andy, and SDP re the o-ring, it's what I'd worked-out but very reassuring to be told that is the case !

    Cheers folks.

I wasn't saying that the OP needed to use the spacer dumbo I was just explaining what it was and how it is intended to be used with a useful link explaining all about cassettes and freehubs . In other words I was answering the question
Exactly what constructive help did your snipe offer the OP ???

Peanut. The OP was talking about Mavic Elites and Shimano 10sp cassettes neither of which were around when the pre HG-C freehubs you were talking about were. Aracer was quite right. You were not answering the question. As has been said the spacer is a Mavic M10 only item for the Shimano cassette. The other 1mm spacer is Shimano 10sp only for use with any freehub..
  • Thought I'd resurrect this post as I have a related question..

I have a shimano 10 speed cassette to fit onto mavic ksyrium wheels. I've had a 9 speed shimano cassette on them for the last few years. Reading this thread (amongst others) I went and got a 1 mm cassette spacer from my LBS to add to the 2mm mavic spacer. However, using both spacers I still get some play in the cassette. I suspect this is because the 1mm spacer I was given fits into the recess of the big cog of the 10 speed cassette so that the spacer is not actually doing anything. Can someone who's fitted such a cassette confirm whether or not the 1mm spacer should fit within the recess or fit flush to the edges of the recess?

In other words, should the 1mm spacer have the same outer diameter as the mavic spacer?

    Cheers!

It has to be larger than the recess. Also I can confirm that no spacers were provided with my Krysium Elites and I had to contact a decent dealer to get one. My LBS knew nothing about them and had none in stock. It seems an incredible lack of customer care by Mavic (as well as ignorance by LBS).
