Have above hub on new wheels. LBS didn't know anything about ProII and need for XT /X9 cassette or better.
Will XC hub be ok with a Deore cassette? Want to be sure before i go for a ride!

If the freehub is aluminium, then the same holds true for the Pro2, the sprockets will dig in. If it is steel it will be fine2009 Cove Handjob

I could be wrong but I thought XC hub came with steel freehub as standard and titanium as an upgrade. Either should be fine with a Deore cassette, but it does beg the question, why are you putting such a heavy old cassette on asuch a quality hub?"Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0

check out merlin - you can get a SRAM PG980 with PC971 chain. £32.00
Its a step down from the 'red' PG990 but tbh theres not much difference.
I run a PG980 on my Marin and its sweet!
Honestly don't get a Deore cassette - they weigh a tonne!0 -
Didn't actually 'get' one just put OE one back on.
Offered to buy XT cassette from him just in case & 'cos i wanted to save a bit of weight. He reckoned weight saving of XT over deore was not worth it!
Either he didn't have any in stock or...I can't think of another reason!
I was dubious but took him at face value  Mind you the fact that he looked at me funny when I said you had to run an XT cassette with PROII scares me a little seeing as he's the geezer who built the wheel :shock:I hate it when people say David Beckham's stupid...its not like anyone ever says: 'Stephen Hawking - he's s**t at football.' I've run all kinds of Shimano cassettes on Hope XC and Pro II hubs without probs.
Deore are heavier but like LX are dependable.
Get XT if you can though it's a fair bit lighter.
SRAM cassettes I've had didn't last anywhere near as long as even basic Shimano ones so I just stick with SRAM for chains, rear derailleur and shifters (XTR front mechs though).Dave S0 -
Due a cassette and chain change fairly soon anyway but forks and wheels have emptied the christmas coffers.
Sure my son had a piggy-bank somewhere...
Did a bit of research and it is the alloy freehub on Pro II that's the problem - XC is, as Splasher said, steel so no worries.
Cheers for the replies.I hate it when people say David Beckham's stupid...its not like anyone ever says: 'Stephen Hawking - he's s**t at football.' Paul Calf0 -
It's an expensive change I know but I've just had to do the same thing on my Cove hardtail and went for an SRAM 991 cross-step chain with an XT cassette and shifting is all smooth again now.
My old LX cassette and SRAM PC99 chain were well hammered and this was on a Pro II hub.
It's one of those unavoidable things on bikes, nothing worse than bad gear changes or gear slips under load.
Forget the shiny bits the drivetrain is the thing you use most.Dave S0 -
I have DT Swiss rear free-hub and a standard deore sprockets. The DT Swiss hub is due to Spesh sending out a replacement rear wheel under warranty. They replaced the standard Rockhopper rear wheel with a Stumpy FSR Pro rear wheel. My issue is will the deore sprockets damage the DT Swiss free-hub? And is there a replacement free-hub outer to replace the undoubtedly damaged one when I take the sprockets off?
Ideally I would take the sprockets off and find little or no damage to the free-hub and replace them with an XT rear sprocket set.Specialized Rockhopper '07

A complete drivetrain change is on the cards TBH. The Truvativ Blaze chainset is heavy and unless everything is running silky smooth it has a tendency to suck the chain on the odd occasion i use the granny ring-got some nasty scarring on my chainstay where that's happened Damn chainstay protector just wasn't quite long enough :xI hate it when people say David Beckham's stupid...its not like anyone ever says: 'Stephen Hawking - he's s**t at football.'
